My 99 Dakota 3.9,manual ,4x4 .Starts and runs fine
on cold days.Once it has warmed up the engine surges, missfires, backfires, and finally stalls if I come to a stop. The engine MIL light is on steady, once the engine stalls and after a restart it seems to run relitivly normal.Im in Canada so cold would be below freezing the colder it is the worse it is.The engine swaps over from "closed loop" to "open loop" after warm up this is when it goes bad.I need a reader to get a Fault Code.Help!

Do you have AutoZone stores up there ?, they will pull codes for free here in the states.

you dont need a reader ,you can do it yourself .
turn the ignition switch on three times but dont start, on the thrid try leave the ingnition switch on , the didgital odometer well display your code it well start with a p and so on make sure to mark them down ,
then you can head over to www.actron. com they have a general list of codes that you can get an idea of whats wrong with your truck
it works on my 2000

I have the shop manual so I can translate the code,I just cant get a code.
Turning the ignition switch on/off,on/off,on dosent give a code on the 99 model. The shop manual was a waste because it has no trouble shooting for the engine/fuel/ignition systems

take your manual and run trough the test procedure for the coolant temp sensor, and the test for the oxygen sensors. an O2 SENSOR not going into closed loop , or a coolant temp sensor telling the ECM that the engine is cold could do this.
where do you live up here ?

Curious if you found what the problem was. This problem started on my '99 Dakota (3.9L, Manual - 2WD)for the last two days. After it sits out in the cold overnight, it starts up fine. But after ten minutes of driving, it misses, surges, and dies when I stop. After I restart it, it runs fine for the rest of the 30 mile trip to my office. This has only happened over the last couple of days when the temperature dropped to about 5 degrees F. The check engine light did come on but I have not been able to pull the code yet. Any light you can shed would be greatly appreciated.

Took the truck to the dealer yesterday, they said a code P-1391 "intermittent loss of Cam position or Crank position sensor" For PL 2.0L came up. (Any one know what "PL 2.0L" means???)
Apperently because they both feed info for the fuel injection they both come up. The strange thing is they are both used in start, warmup, and idle loops of the PCM but I only have a problem after warm up,and once the truck stalls out it seems to run ok.What an electrical nightmare!!

Wish it was that simple.
Not much carbon in a truck that drives 120 kph
(70mph) for an hour and a half most days

Man this sounds like my trouble only maybe not as bad. My 99 just started acting up about a week ago. No engine light though. I live in Cali so I'm not dealing with the extreme cold you are (maybe 55-60 on a cold day) and so maybe that's why mine isn't quite as bad. Does this sound similar?

I start up fine but I only drive it for about 10 minutes to my gym and then kill it until I'm done with my workout, then when I restart it, it runs fine for a second then it idles down to 500rpm and then fluters and dies. I restart it and it dies agian unless I rev it up for a few seconds and then it's fine for the trip home. I rarely drive it during the week and on weekends I don't have much trouble after I've driven it for awhile. It's got 58k on it and it may only need a tune up. What do you guys think?

Bil

that is exactly what my truck was doing, check your battery terminals, clean them and make sure they are on really tight. if that doesn't work, get your battery checked, i think Sears does it for free.

i did that to mine and the problem went away. the battery couldn't power everything at low rpms untill i drove for a few minuetes,

kevin

Brent, did the dealer have any suggestions or is there a TSB issued on this? Mine is getting worst. Today is the third day that this has happened and it did not run normal for a couple of miles after the truck warmed up. Rev's keep going erratic and then it dies.

First to Bil,
if you still have the original battery in your
99 throw it in the garbage. Mine went last summer and the dealer replaced my starter before figuring out it was the battery. The original battery is a sealed unit and there is no way to check the electrolite level.A load check dosent really give a true test of the whole battery.(mine had a loose cell that would ocassionally short out)

York
The dealers only advice was to replace my crank or cam sensor but they didnt know which one was bad.
(gee thanks for all the help) so they thought I might just want to replace both.(fat chance)

Brent,

Took my truck to Auto Zone to have fault code check. Same result as yours. P-1391 - Intermittent loss of CMP or CKP signal (cam or crank positioner). I think that this code is a result of the rough idle and not the cause of the problem.

It was warmer by 10 degrees overnight and I did not have any problems this morning.

Anyway, I'm ging to do more research and toubleshooting until I get to the bottom of this.

Brent,

Did you reach a conclusion on your stalling problem yet? I didn't use my truck for a week but when I did yesterday, the problem was worse than ever. It took four or five restarts before the rough idle and stalling went away.

Thanks if you can supply any info.

Checked my coolant and found the mixture is way off (or non existant.)
The coolant should be 50/50 glycol and water.
I think mine is all glycol. The dealer changed my water pump and coolant a while back.So I will be paying them another visit.
I started pluging in my block heater and things got better. But its been so cold lately nothing seems to help.I think the coolant is gelling in the rad and when the thermostat opens it lets the gelled coolant into the engine.

I have a 99 V8 4x4. My truck stalled last week while I was just driving. That weekend I was pulling a trailor and boat and it would stall but not like an engine stall (it was like the engine turned off {no backfire or weak engine sounds} and the gauges just stayed the same RPM and speed almost frozen for justa split second then all gauges turned off. It seemed to happen more as it got hot....it started to take longer and longer for it to start. It would read NO BUS on the digital display, then after the third time I had someone pick up the boat and it drove for good for a couple of hours (dying once but started right up). Someone told me it was the PCM.....HAS ANYONE EVER HEARD OF THIS PROBLEM.

my 99 had many symptoms you all are describing. took it in, they replaced the speed sensor. idle is smooth, brake warning and abs warning are off, brakes are like a rock, engine ping is gone, speedometer works again, and it hasn't stalled since. all because of a faulty speed sensor...hope that helps someone.
