 Subject: top speed sucks

i have a 93 v6 dak and it is now topping out at 85 mph. why?
ill be driving in overdrive at about 83 mph at about 3600 rpms, then, all of a sudden it downshifts into 3rd, and hits redline at 85 mph. IT WONT GO ANY FASTER.
i read something about turning a cable on the T.B. to raise up the shift points, but i dont know much about that. could some one help me. i need to do something, my friends LUMINA is beating me.

Like mine was, its run'n otta breath. I just followed the advise of the guys here, swapped the TB for a V8, added a K&N filter and set TBS and 100+ isn't a problem. Just ask and these guys will help you out.

well i dont know about the older daks but my 99 v6 is pretty good......i hit the highway and do 85 mph and i still have a whole lotta peddle left to work with......

I've got an 02 V6 5spd and it tops at only about 85-90. I got it to 105mph going down hill, it was very disappointing!!

I was traveling between Houston and San Antonio, Texas a couple of months back at about 80mph when a big, pretty Ford Powerstroke dragging a 16' lowboy trailer w/2 big four wheelers and an assortment of hunting gear eased by me at about 110-115mph. I gently put my right foot to the floor and held it there for almost 65 miles. My truck (97 c/c, usual mods. 5/speed) tops out at about 110-115mph and was restricted by wind resistance.....yea, I had my tailgate down....and never did catch that darn F.U.R.D.

93dakman....Wow...that is it??? 85mph...Chip B & BillPa are right. Look at that beast... You should be able to get it up to 120 without the mods....Check to see if there is a clogged cat or muffler....crushed xhaust pipe...throttle body not fully opening???

I have a 97 v6 5speed dakota, it's top speed does kind of suck for racing, at 115mph, but the power delivery until then is amazing. I've raced rice burners and other v8 trucks, and I smoked em.

man i have checked everything. i have no cat, the t.b. opens completly, i have a flowmaster muffler. i can only think of one thing, you know that other cable on the t.b. that makes the tranny kick down, well, anwhere over 3/4 throttle it kicks down out of o/d into 3rd, and wont go much faster. how do i make it stay in o/d longer?

I was in 4th gear at about 4200rpm going 115mph then the speed limiter kicked in and dropped me down.

my 95 v6 x-cab auto used to top out around 90, now it's some where around 130-140. hehehe

things I plan to do to my dakota this summer,(twin turbo kit, computer chip, lower 3-4 inches, bigger rims, dual exhaust, cold air intake, double-face clutch, racing transmission, and etc.)
then we'll see how fast she goes.
I doubt that I will get it all done though.

Maybe you should toss it in second auto trans (go doing that in Manual, rip the tranny out of the darn truck) and let it rip. Or maybe you tranny bands are out of ajustment? Cause my first gear whisles mine maybe out of ajustment. I've only had my 99' Dodge Dakota Sport V6 going 103MPH but it wanted much, much more. No mods. Maybe you should check the floor mat?

I have a 92 Dakota 3.9 V6. I used to be able to only go about 90. Maybe a little more. I put on a V8 throttle body and I have gotten it up to 95 with much more throttle left, just not enough road. I am guessing 110-115. I will try it if I can find a road where I am not endangering nobody.

Get a hypertech chip, a JET chip, or a PCM reflash, and it'll get rid of the governer AND the rev limiter.:)

Before I swapped my TB I was able to break the 100 mph barrier. But I never pushed it beyond that point. After I did the V8 TB and cable upgrade I was only able to go 90 mph (with the pedal to the floor!!) Did I miss something when I upgraded my TB.

had a similar problem on my 93 dak it was electrical in nature , and related to an antitheft device that was installed .you can try to adjust the TV cable ,and check the fluid that its not to low or to high .

93, 3.9, 5sp, got her at 100mph in 4th, she was accelerating slowly, but ran out of road. I bet when I take out the cat converter and slap on a pair of hearthrob duals she'll get there quicker and top out higher, what do you guys think?

I've gotten my '03 Dak up to 90mph without any trouble. And it was still pushing for more. But now that I had that damn ticket. I need to watch it. Court Supervision and all.

couldn't get mine over 85. my truck(02 3.9 sport rc 5 spd). of course i was in 5th gear and don't have a cover on my bed! Don't know what it will do in 4th, not sure how high i can take the rpm's since the stupid guages don't have a red line on them. 5th gear is geared so dam low(or high, whichever it is i get confused) you can get no power, which of course if you have no cover on i really believe that you create a lot of drag and it holds you back. i'm gonna do some mods but nothing outrageously expensive, you know the usual stuff.

I got mine up to 120 before. It's a 93' dakota sport with about 260,000 miles and the original trans. I have no trouble at all getting up to that speed either.

I have gotten my 94 3.9 sport cc up to 90....It was still climbing but I was afraid to push it anyfaster on the country road....
