Hello all,
I'm a new guy with mopars or domestics in general and am planning to convert my 95 Dakota sport V6- to a carb V8 318. The question I have is since the multi port 318 came in my year dakota could I swap the carb 318 using the multi port 318 motor mounts? I'm also planning of swapping the 5spd trans which is known for the 5th gear bolt backing off for a Auto trans obviously not electronic controlled, which means I will also be looking for a trans that will fit the truck and allow the use ofthe factory driveshaft. Any help with these questions or help in where to search would be extremely helpful. Thanks in advance.

Hey, I have a '95 dak 3.9 --> 318 that I did last christmas. I took a fuelie engine from a 96 ram and it went in with no problem. I think the motor mounts have been the same as long as magnum engines have been used. The I-4 is different but that should be obvious.

I would check state laws to see what emissions regulations are on this kind of swap. if your state follows california laws, you must use a newer engine than when your truck was made and it must be a factory option.

If you want to use a carbed motor than I think you'll be stuck running a 727 trans which doesn't have overdrive. the newer 4x-RH and 4x-RE transmissions have electronically controlled over drive circuits.

Hope this helps,
Geoff

If you wanna keep OD than get an A518 or a not as strong A500, they will bolt up to either a mag or LA (pre mag carbed engine), you will need the proper converter. if the tranny came behind a 360 and your using a 318 than you'll need and diffrent converter and vise versa.
No problem with the electronics of this either as it is a simple on off switch for the OD that can work with any engine, no pcm needed.
If you want it simple than yes an old school 727 or well rebuilt 904 will do but you will lose a low first gear set and obviously OD.

If you had a 5spd originally than none of these options will allow you to use the original driveshaft, now as far as "factory" goes that is possible but figuring out your end combination to the driveshaft you'll need will prove to be a headache. I would just get your combination in the truck, take a measurment and your original driveshaft to a local driveshaft shop and drop a hundred or so to get that headache outa the way.
Thats what I had to do when I put the 1970 8 3/4 rear im my 94.

Good luck

FazDak I hadn't considered how simple it would be to set up an o/d switch for the trans. My mistake there.

What year is your truck? I've got a '95 that looks amost exactly like that but yours looks a bit lower. Did you do any suspension work to it? Now that I put in my 318 I will need to redo the suspension because it dropped the front end about 2"

No, no suspension mods here. lol,
I know, stop being a smart ass.

I did mine the "wrong way", I have 1 1/2 coils cut out the front and spring relocators and 2" blocks in the rear.

You have to understand that I only drive this Dak every couple of weeks and usually only when its warm. It just a toy and not using it on a regular bassis means I dont totally care if it bottoms out alot, dont get me wrong, it suks when it does but for the look it has I can put up with it most the time.

Take care.

Fazdak,

Man I know I've told you that your ride is tight on many ocassion, and if I didn't, well I meant too. I've gotten many engine mod's from you in the last year, and I finally have a chance where I can share my area of expertees. You can eliminate the bottoming out, even though (you know you did it the wrong way, ie cutting springs) just get a decent pair of lowered shocks, and you should be str8. I'm not sure if you have the fatory one's or not, but trust me, I have a 4/6 drop on the old 87, and I'm planning on putting 20's on in the next month, good drop shocks will help you out a lot. I definately understand about the truck being a toy. Mine is a very expensive toy, as I'm trying to get it show ready, and find a mag 3.9 so I can excute all of the engine mod's that I've learned from all of my friends here. Seriously though think about the dropped shocks, and maybe get a c notch for the rear axles. Just wanted to share some helpfull advice, as you have to me for soooooooo many times in the past, and a thanx in advance for the advice I drain from you in the future.

Dude, thanks alot for the compliments!!

Yeah I remeber you, Im glad I could help a fellow Dak lover.

I unfortunantly have to report that I do have Bell Tech Nitro drop shocks on it, I put em on about a week after I completed the drop.
What you must understand is that even with the rubber cut down to 1" on the rebounders up front the lower control arms are still about 1" from the rubber.
I need to take the rebounder cups out all the way but just havent felt like taking the springs back out to unbolt the cups.

Thanks alot for your advice, keep it comming as alot of em (and me from time to time. :-D) on here can use it.

Hope all is well with you and yours.

I want to put a 318 or maybe even a 360 (either way i am going with fuel injection.) i have a 93 3.9 with a manual trans. Can i use this trans with either of those engines, Or would i have to get a different one. I would like to stay with the manual trans. Another thing, what is the name of the transmissions that are available?

thanks!

Jay,

What's going on? Are you still overseas? You said that you were still looking for a mag 6er. Did you ever get that 6er performance book? I remember you said that you ordered one, just wondering if you got it yet and had a chance to check it out. That email I sent you awhile back, did you figure out everything that I told you about for putting a mag in your non-mag dak? If you still have questions, email. If you can't find my email, its moparman732000@yahoo.com.

Later,
Buck

'93 3.9 RC... A few mods... ;-)
'88 340 RC... I'll never tell... Okay, I might... ;-)
