3.9's are odd-fires?? No wonder why the idle feels so bumpy!! Isn't odd-fire set ups a relic from the 1970's??? And how are all of you people's tranmissions holding up to the hp increases you've made?? My 99 was shot at 40,000 miles with no engine mods and very lightly driven. Incidently, my friend's 96 K1500 Chevy just had a tranny overhaul at 130,000 miles, with much heavy towing done during its lifetime....hmmmmmm.....

Hehehehe....lifters, we don't need no steenkin lifters. ;) (No biggie)

SloDak: Yup, that's why they never idle smoothly. My AX-15 is still holding up fine but blew up my 8.25" a few weeks ago. She now has a DANA 8.25 (H/D Unit) with 3.90 gears.

Remember, the AX-15 in the V6's is a "Jap Tranny". You can also swap out the 8.25" for the 9.25" and it's relatively easy.

SloDak,
I've done everything from offroading (truck use to be jacked up),to pulling a boat, to racing. Have approx. 44,400 on the od and everything is working fine. Yeah, it has suprised me too that the auto has taken that much abuse.. but if it breaks I might just have to go and buy a 440!!
Don't look at it as something breaking but something you can improve!

SloDak,

I have a 3.9 auto clubcab that up until recently has been stock and It's always done right by me, I love it. It's been peppy and never had any major problems besides brakes (boooo DM) and a pcm recall like 2 weeks after I had it and I've also had it to 115mi/hr without all that much effort and its been in plenty of off road situations that a 4x2 with bald street tires dosen't need to be in and it has 47,000mi on it as of today with no tranny problems although its starting to shift slopply from 3rd to 4th in WOT situations, but thats what shift kits are for right :)

I have the auto trans, not the ax-15. Do you think my dak feels slow because of the 3.55 gears??? Someone told me that before i screw with the engine, i should change to gears in the 3.70's or 3.80's......

the 3.55s are the reason there is what little pep these things have when stock. changing to a lower gear will help off the line put when your going 65 and need to pass someone quicker..it won't help much.
what kind of mods have you done to your truck?

None yet, because i keep having to spend money on stuff that keeps breaking.....such as a 1000 dollar tranny overhaul......i heard 3.92's make these trucks much quicker.....i'm not worried about doing 90 mph.........

slowdak,
i would have to say the single biggest improvement to my truck performance (besides nitrous) would be the exhuast and intake. Go spend $70 on a flowmaster or dynomax (i've had both and like the flowmaster more) and $30 to have somebody weld it on. Next spend around $150 for a intake and filter (at least replace the drop in with a k&n). that would set you back about $250 and you will get a noticable improve ment in hp,tq, and mpg. Total cost of a gear swap would be around $500 and that would help any of those. my muffler is dumped and i purchase the mopar cold air intake. from the dealership the cold air intake cost $370 but i made a friend (i.e. the guy who sold me the truck) and he gave me the employee discount and it cost only $240!

are the 3.92 gears the reason that my truck has such bad acceleration between 30 and 60, or do they just help off the line?

they mainly help off the line...don't know about hurting acceleration but i really can't anwer that. How hard of an acceleration are you talking about; flooring it or just hitting the throttle enough to pass someone?
