Subject: Which Detroit Locker for my Dakota?
IP: Logged

Message:
I am debating the Detroit Locker for my 97 v6 2wd [it has a 8.25" 3.21 diff, not limited slip, but I also need to up the gearing to 3.55] or a PowerTrax No-slip system. The PowerTrax is easy to figure out which model I need. However, I can't seem to find which model I need in the Detroit Locker system. I know I don't know anything about these systems, so I am asking for any help you can give. The problem I see is that the GM, Ford, Jeep Dana 30, and AMC are all listed as individual parts, and then I see Dana 44 and 60 models. However, despite other articles, I don't see ANY Chrysler or Dodge systems. Is this a Dana 44? Which one am I looking for?

Also, what is the difference between "True-Trac", "Soft Locker" and "E-Z Locker"? My goal is better off-road use [mainly prowling backroads] and better foul-weather performance, but as close to stock performance on-road as possible. I am looking for 'the best of all worlds': durability, performance, and highest gas mileage. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

A Locker will indeed make your off road performance better. But if you want to keep the street performance as close to stock as possible, you definately want to go with a Limited-slip rather than a locker. A locker is gonna keep both wheels locked (they will not differentiate) while you're putting power to them. Therefore on the street you'll notice some slight wheel hop when giving it gas around sharper turns. Also, you'll hear a clicking sound when the locker unlocks on sharp turns. Some people say thats annoying. Best of both worlds??? I'd have to suggest limited slip. Dana Trac-Lock is cheap, and I've been pleased so far (I've only had it in a few weeks and haven't did much since.) I hear Auburn makes good LSD's, though they're much more expensive.

I have the Detroit in the Rear axel and it does not pop and clunk when it engages and disengages. Yes you do get chirping when turning, especially on wet roads, and when you step on it from a stop. Off road there is a difference. It is more expensive though.

I called Power trax and they did not offer a locker for my axel. So I went with Detroit. Plus it was recommened.

Never late for a Tee time or wheelin with my buddies! Always ready for both!!!
