Well I have been gone a while at Texas Tech getting my learning on and well finally get to put a bit of money into my truck. I don't really know of a good site for the 3.9L V6 other than here so I'll ask you all even though I own a Ram.

Here are my problems it's a 5-6 hour road trip from Dallas to Lubbock at legal speeds and well on cruise the truck shifts out of O/D more then I would like. It's too slow off the line and shifts too early. Nor does it seem to handle well at all. That and it eats gas. Once speeding I took the truck to the limit. The truck couldn't go past 100mph nor could it maintain this speed for longer then 5 mins without a break for a slight change in conditions(maybe wind). I know I won't do that again(I'm an idiot for doing it but ... that's in the past) it really doesn't seem to hold speeds >70 well for any period of time. Sorry for that.

I have had my truck a while but I haven't done any mods what so ever and now I need to start as it's really bugging me.

Where to go as far as performance wise I would like to stay NA and not too interested in extreme hp yet. So do you think i/h/e + 1.7 rockers will bring to sufficently drive at around 70-75mph? If not what else can I add that worthwhile and easy?

For the suspension what can I do? I suppose lowering it make would improve performance. I like the looks of a 265/??R16 tire which would be a step up from stock I think as I have 245/75R16's which suck and lasted 16K miles.

As far as shifting goes is there anything that I can do to have my auto tranny shift later say 500-1000 rpms past what it's doing now? And/or make it downshift sooner as in less throttle needed to force the action? I wish I could just write my own custom scripts sort-of and have it hold as I want but oh well.

Those are the main problems. Can you help? Am I in the right direction?

A shift kit and a computer chip would probably help the transmission shift better.

If you have waranty, have the trans checked. There is a flash for the controller on it. Sounds like the OD is kicking in and out. Do this first before any mods. The 1.7 rr will be fine. 70mph the rpm's should be way under 4000 depending on you gear. A V8 or F&B throttle body and a good cat back will be good too. Transgo makes a good shift kit. I'm doing a 2/3 lowering on mine this week, springs front and rear. So I can tell you more on the later. Good luck.

Of course, I have no idea what your situation is, but if your truck is more than 3 years old, I'd just trade it for a V8 model. Use the money that you'd spend on V6 mods as a downpayment...you'll never be happy with the performance that you can get out of a 3.9 without spending several thousand dollars...I have a 2002 3.9 Dakota, and I've already learned my lesson.

I would... But it's just how it is right now. BTW it's a 2001 so it's not that old yet but as I said I am either stuck with it or I could move into a smaller sedan like a Lancer or a Civic.
