that's normal. i get about 15mpg in strictly city driving, about 20-22 on the highway. it's only a little better than the V8's. remember, all the fuel economy that you would have is blown trying to move out hefty daks.

no you are not the only one that gets lousy gas milage. a top all the mods I have done to my truck it still gets about the same crapy milage that it got when it was new.

Same here. I got about 2.5mpg improvement by making the following changes:
180° Thermostat
Autolite 3924 plugs
NAPA brass contact cap & rotor set
Home made K&N cold air intake system
Electric fan conversion (removed clutch fan)
ACCELL 8.0mm plug wire set/coil wire reroute
Flowmaster Deltaflow 50 series muffler

I'm not sure which of these had the biggest impact. But I do know for certain I am getting MUCH more power, smoother power delivery, and better gas mileage. Not done yet. Next is the tonneau cover and fuel injectors. This is a lot to spend to get the improvements. Guess it's kind of a personal goal to improve the lousy mileage these Daks get.

I am currently getting anywhere from 13 to 22 MPG with a 5 speed on a 2000 Dakota 4x4 Club Cab SLT+.

However, I have cap on for the winter months with dual roof racks. I got once 19MPG going 75 MPH but averaging 16 MPG now in the highway. I am getting 300 miles to empty and the cap dropped it down to that (was getting 330 on the Distance to Empty on the trip computer).

I am running the following modications:
-MSD Super Conductor 8.5 Wires
-Helix Power Control Tower (throttle body riser)
-Amsoil 100% Synthetic oil in engine
-Amsoil 100% Synthetic ATF+4 in transfer case
-Amsoil 100% Synthetic Gear Lube in both differentials
-Power Stant 160 degre theromstat
-K&N Air Filter
-High performance single glass pack muffler with dual 2.75 inch stainless exhaust
-31x10.5x15 BG Goodwich Mud Terrains tires
-J.D Front end reciever hitch
-Radio Shack CB
-K40 whip antenna
-Radio shack laser/radar detector
-Bearcat 100 channel scanner
-Brakemaster electric brake controller
-Dashboard carpet hugger
-Dodge seat covers
-Dodge logo rear side window covers
-Burlwood interior trim
-Mopar rubber floor mats, door sills, mudflaps, window deflectors and bug shields

Future mod
-Cold Air Intake
-MSD Off-Road Ignition System
-Transformer Brush Guard System
-Body Lift and Suspension Lift (when warrenty is gone at 100,000 miles)

Overall, my mileage is not that bad. It is worse in the winter. Having Mud Terrains probably does not help nor dual exhuast but i wont change them out for anything now. I am always looking for ways to improve my mileage.

Why is everyone getting such poor gas mileage? I have a 94 club cab with a cap and average 19 to 20 miles per gallon and I have only added a K & N intake kit.

Yup, crappy mileage is part of the game. When I tell people what kind of mileage I get, the same thing comes up: I could have bought the V8 and saved money on gas. But since I have a few years worth of payments left, all I can do is try to improve it!

I run the 3.55 diff with 31x10.5's, auto trans CC 2WD, F&B TB, K&N, IAT, Magnaflow. I currently have been running 13.5-15 mpg, combined mileage. I just changed the TB so I won't know the impact for a couple of tanks until the PCM is set up for the TB. Then my mileage should stabilize at it's new state.

I have a 2001 Dodge Dakato sport 4X4 3.9 L. 5 speed. I now get 15 in the city and 21 on the highway. It was about 1-2 miles per gallon less, but I had Nitrogen put in the tires when I last had them rotated. I was kinda skeptical at first, but for 10 bucks for all four tires, why not. Nitrogen is used in racing tires instead of air. Nitrogen is suppose to keep tires at a constant pressure and keep them running cool. I still haven't reached out of the vehicle to feel them going 70mph on the expressway. I also have my bed covered. That helps with less drag.

Has anybody used one of those Turbonators that hooks to your air intake? It suppose to create better air flow to burn fuel more efficiently.

hey jeff , don't bother with those turbonators big waste of time and money. the only way something like that can work is by putting it under the throttle blades, putting it in front will do nothing because when the air hits the blades it straightens out, putting it under the blades the air will swirl into the combustion chamber like they say. ever see a spacer for carbs or fuel injection? they have grooves in them for that reason.

this is why alot of people wish they would of got a V-8 they get almost the same gas mileage. I would think a V-6 would get in the mid to upper 20's maybe almost 30 highway. I know my brother in law wish he would of got the V-8 over the V-6. he thought he was saving money on gas till his friend got a v8 and saw they got the same mileage.

my 2003 3.9L SXT V6 gets around 13 city and I do all city driving in the winter. It is absolute crap how poor my milage is. My car is all stock to, so i havent done any mods to it. I am using Lucas fuel treatment and so far it seems to be working. I can get more power out of how far i push down the accelerator now that this Lucas stuff is going to work on my engine. Other than that, i wish I would have bought the V8 because the milage is almost the same from what i have read. Hopefully next summer my milage will be better due to the warm air and the sandbags not in the back any more.

All stock except K&N drop-in filter (which did NOTHING for performance and gas mileage), I have a 92 Dak club cab with cap, 3.9L V-6, 4-spd auto with 3.55 axle, 4WD, and I average 19 mpg. I get 20-22 highway, and no less than 17 around town. Some of you have lead feet.

your right. i average about 19 in winter 20 in the summer. but when my sister drives it, it goes down at least 3 mpg. when you slam the gas from every stoplight you are wasting tons of gas. what qualifies as highway driving anyways?

If you make a lot of short trips (<5 miles) with the engine cooling off in between you will get terrible mpg. Until it reaches operating temp it runs in open loop and is dumping lots of gas in. Like I said, I can get 25mpg @ 65mph, but if I make nothing but short trips all week I only get like 12mpg (I've got pretty tall rearend gearing though).
