Subject: 318-3.9 engine mounts

Message:
I have an involved question.I have a 5.2 block out of an 88 fifth ave.On this block the engine mounts are attached with bolts running parallel to the block at the front of the block. My 3.9 they mount directly into the block also at the front of the block and direclty over the axle. Now I have a 91 DAK and the 318 was an option for that year.My question is, are the 91 318's the same as the 88's...do the block mounts attach the same way?If so then do the frame mounts for the 318 in a dakota extend beyond the axle. What do I have to do to mount this thing.TIA,gary r.

Not sure but you could measure from the bellhousing to the motor mount on both engine and see if the 318 will drop in to your current mounts.

as far as where the motor mounts bolt in to the motor, they have been the same since the 318 first started. the motor mount it's self is different though. I got my motor mounts from www.engine-swaps.com and they work great for my '88. Being that your truck had the option of the 318, then all you have to do to swap is to buy the motor mounts for your truck as if it was a 318. there is a lot more to a swap like this than just changes motor mounts and whalla! if you want help e-mail me at moparman732000@yahoo.com or just ask the guys at engine-swaps.com.
Hope this helps...

later,

'98 3.9 RC... A few mods... ;-)
'88 340 RC... I'll never tell... Okay, I might... ;-)

Just found out it won't work unless i buy some adapters. They changed the block in 90 to make it work in the dakotas. They added three holes about where cylinders three and four would be on the 5.2.This is the exact same place and way they are on the 3.9.Does anyone know if the 318 in a ram full size 1991 has the three mounting holes. It being a full size they are mounted using the boss mounts at the front of the block but i can't see if the three holes are there as the exhaust manifold is in the way.

so gary, are you saying that the 318 block from a 90-up dakota will use the same mounts as a pre-90 dakota. will a 318 drop into my 88 4x?, motor mount and trany wise?

There is a difference between the mounts that attach to the block on the 3.9 and the 5.2 , but they attach in the exact same location. The frame mounts are the same on both the 3.9 and 5.2.I finally got to study a dakota with a factory installed 5.2.Apparently these holes on the 5.2and 3.9, were only present on blocks that were slatted for the dakotas.Every late model full size truck with the 5.2 I've looked at does not have these attaching points.
