I have a 01 dokata V6, and I am beggining to have transmision problems. First, My engine light came on. Next, the tranny stays in first for a while then shifts to third and is fine until I stop. After I stop and go again, It just skips first gear. It is fine once I get going, but every time I stop the same thing happens. This happened about 2 months also, but was acting fine the next day until last week. Any suggestions. It has 53000 miles on it and the trany shop wants $500 dollars just to pull it out and look at it.

Would those 2 sensors be the speed sensor and the kickdown solenoid? Where are they physically located and how easy is it to replace them?

First check the electrical connections on the
trans.

There is 1 plug on the side near the pan and the
other is back by the tailshaft both on drivers
side. Physicly disconect them and check for carosion

Don't the 01 have the 7 70 warantee on the drive
train and would be covered by dealer

could be a band adjustment or a valve in the
valve body hanging up, when is the last time
you changed fluid and filter and adjusted the bands

Thanks for the reply. No 7/70 warrenty on 01 model. I have never changed fluid or filter. Does adjusting bands and/or valve require taking trans out or can it be done from the pan?

Heres one that i cannot seem to fix... recently had a code go that said o2 sensor was bad so i replaced it and reset computer. It worked fine for about 2days then the original problem came back, which was horrible acceleration from a stop. the truck just bogged right down and with peddle to the floor nothing happened. as soon as i drop it into 1st gear away she went. as long as the rpms are up the truck runs great. and when i come to a stop in drive, it feels as if someone is bumping me from behind and sometimes idles rough. ive recently changed plugs and wires and it runs great as long as i'm shifting manually from 1st to 2cnd to drive. its just getting really annoying... anyone with some input??

Band Adjustment - low-reverse, inside the pan, easy to get to when you service the transmission. Kick-down band adjustment is on the side of the transmission. Must have an inch-pound torque wrench and a hard to find square socket.

I would have the trans. serviced by the dealer and the bands adjusted by them. Probably cost about $100. It is worth a try. Also use ATF +4.

I have a Jeep Grand Cherokee with the 42RE. It has 150K on it and has not been rebuilt. These trans. must be serviced about every 30,000 and the bands need to be adjusted. Also, the throttle valve cable must be adjusted correctly.

If it still doesn't work correctly after the above, dump a can of tran x in it (NAPA). If it still doesn't work, rebuild it.

My husband and I have a small used car lot in N.M. We just bought an 01 Dakota 4X4 and it ran like a champ. My husband went on to his hunting trip, I was to take the trunk on to the car lot, (2hour drive home) and about 25 miles from home, the tranny quit on me. Three hours later, a tow dolly and drop the drive line to tow it cause the back tires were locked, its at the repair shop. Great! Any profit on this sale is gone now. Any body else have this or a similar problem? Pam

I have a 98 dak with 2wd 3.8 v6 and it broke down on me last night. I put the truck into any gear and it will start to go and then wind out with a loss of power to the wheels( in drive only getting about 20 mph before losing power) and i will get a high pitch spinning wine as if the clutch isnt grabbing for some reason. Its right before christmas and i have to put off buying any christmas presents for my daughter or wife in fear that the repair bill will be more than i can afford. the truck only has 66,000 miles on it and dose not make any sense to me. I am poor and this truck is my only means of transportation. please, please help me. any response is greatly appreciated. thanx.

Common problem with these transmissions. Basically it is internal leaks, worse when it is cold. Service the trans (about 4 quarts of fluid and a filter and gasket). If you use ATF +4, it will help due to its better performance in cool weather. The bands should be adjusted also but it is unlikely that the band adjustment is your problem.

I would put a can of sealer in it and see if that helps before I gave up and had it rebuilt. I have had good luck with Trans X, available at NAPA. These products dissolve varnish and soften seals. Its worth a try if you are facing a rebuild.

I have a 03 Dak with 4sp auto, 13K miles. I installed a motor home tranny cooler ( its about 35-40% the size of the radiator, its huge ).
We are having single digit temps here. I drove the Dak for the first time in severe cold and it took 6 miles of freeway driving before the torque conveter locked up ( OD ). Dealer said it wont lock up until the fluid gets up to temp. Since I have such a large cooler on it, it's taking a little longer than normal. Dealer said it wont hurt nothing.

I had the same problem in my 99 6 banger. The tranny has a piston in it. And the seals of the pistons are shot, or nearly shot. I live in MN so it would always do this when the car was cold, then once heated the problem would be gone.

Is it time to rebuild? I have a 1987 3.9 v6 Dak, 2 wheel drive auto trans. 140k miles. Truck was off the road (garaged) for about a year. Put it back on 4 mos ago. It was slipping a little so I had the fluid changed and a new filter. This cleared up the problem till recently. About a month ago it started slipping from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd when it was cold. By slipping I mean it would begin to rev and then finally shift up to the next gear. If I accelerated slowly, or let the car warm up, the problem didnt occur, it would shift up thru the gears ok. About two weeks ago the slow acceleration bit stopped working, it wont shift up from 1st to 2nd, or from 2nd to 3rd. If I drop it into drive 2, It'll shift fine (no slip at all in drive 2) up to about 35 or 40mph and then I can usually drop back into drive and it'll shift up to 3rd, 4th ect... if I fall below 45mph, and try to re accelerate, it wont shift up, just revs...then I drop it back into drive 2, etc... you get the picture.

So the question is, am I doomed to a rebuild at this point or will some simple band adjustments and a quart of TRAN X maybe get me back in shape?

It hasnt leaked in the 4mos since the fluid was changed.

Hey, it dosent hurt to ask. Thanks Much...
