Subject: 3.9 has hard time starting ANY IDEAS?
IP: Logged

Message:
My 97 3.9 has a hard time starting, it doesnt rev up as high as it should and will die unless you stay on the gas until you get it rolling. It idles kinda rough, and idles at a lower rpm than it used to. It normally stops dying after a few minutes running. Any idea of what it is? All posts welcomed! Thanks!

Mine does that and I know what it is. The check valve in my fuel pump is bad and on top of that I have a bad 02 sensor. if you need help with how to test the check valve in your pump e-mail me

I THINK i had the same thing happen to my truck: immediately after i started it, it would just idle all the way down and die, unless i held the gas pedal; no problem in gear, but in neutral it just died down, and went away once warm. Is this is your problem? If It Is:
I replaced the battery and it took care of it! Don't ask me what the hell that had to do with it, but that fixed it! Hope this helps!

I brought my dakota to the dealership and told them that my truck kept dieing in the morning. For the past couple of weeks I would have to put it in neutral, let it roll down the drive, start it again and while holding the rpms at 1000 put it into drive. After that I would have no problem. About the dealership - they said they couldn't do anything for me because I changed the spark plugs to some Bosch Platinium and change the spark Plug wires to some JBA 8.5mm. I started bitching to them, so they said they would keep it overnight and try it in the morning. How much do you want to bet that it will start up and idle perfectly for them. At first a couple of people told me that it was probably my fuel filter because I switched between 87 octane to 91 back to 87. Finding out the filter was in the tank made changing it myslef not an easy task. But i dunno whats going on with my dakota and I wish it would just start in the morning and idle with no problem.

If you have some miles on these vehicles you more than likely have a dirty throttle body and IAC valve. Clean them up, reset the pcm parameters and then you should have a good flare on startup.
If you have a long crank time, good chance of a leaking fuel pump check valve. Causes a drain back in the fuel system which requires priming time to get the pressure up. Usually will run rough for a few seconds after a long crank time. Hope this helps. These two problems are very common.

My 1997, 3.9 has the same problem. It only does it when it is cold, sometimes it starts, and sometimes it doesn't. I cleaned my throttle body, and that seemed to help a little. Everyone tells me i might have to replace my fuel filter. so i am going to try that, and see if it corrects the problem. Once i get it started, and drive it for about 30 seconds, and stop it idles fine. it does seem to want ot start better when it is warmer( above 32 degrees F).

Damn, fuel filter huh?.... You let me know how that goes. I think that is gonna be a bitch, and i have always wondered how much is involved in it, with dropping the gas tank and all. Good luck man... hope it works out for you.

I had the same trouble, I also have a 97 3.9. After cleaning the IAC valve in the throttle body(which did smooth out the idle some), checking the fuel pressure, checking coolant temp sensor, air temp sensor, checking for vacuum leaks, changing the distributor cap and button, changing the plugs(3923's, that did cut down the valve ping), someone suggested changing the battery. Would you believe it, it fixed the problem, the battery would always start the truck, but it must not have had enough juice to run everything else that needs to run to allow the truck to start and run correctly. I never would have guessed it!!!

I think i am going to replace my battery first before i battle with the fuel filter theory, it seems to be working for alot of people. On a different note, i put new heater core in my 97 3.9 yesterday, and the day before, emphasis on day, because let me tell you it takes all damn day and then some, i have read alot of posts saying it is really easy if you do it this way or that way...LIARS. :0) but at least i have heat now.

If you need to get to the indside of the tank. I can tell you from experience, it is easier to have a buddy over and pull the bed. Trust me on this one. Been their, done that, bad fuel pump that the dealer would not replace.

Once bed is off, a rag and some strong hads to undo a plastic "ring" that screws on the tank, and wa-la. Pump and filter is out.

I would try and just clean the battery terminals and check the cables. I had the same problem and that was all I had to do. Five minutes cleaning saved me from buying a new battery.

I've got a similar problem with my '87 4x4 with the carburator...Fire it up and it fast idles fine. Kick it down out of fast idle and it still is idling fine. Give it about another minute and the idle drops too low to keep it running. I have to roll up to stop signs with the truck in neutral and feather the gas to keep it running. Also, when taking off from the stop sign it just doesn't want to go. If I give it very much throttle it loses power. However, after I drive it for another 5 or 10 minutes the idle comes back up to normal and I can drive it around fine. I've already rebuilt the carb and checked for vacuum leaks and have found nothing. If anyone has any suggestions I will definitely appreciate it.

hmmm u say u loose power when u stomp on it?
have u adjusted mixture screws just adjust them until u can mash it in neutrel or park without any engine hesitation
as for a dive in rpm adjust ur choke it should fix that for cold morning run times

mines just exactly different it dies in heat and runs like a champ in 40f and tested down to -20f
oh wate i think i know what it is i had the dealer flash something on my comp to run rich when its first started but the funny thing is it idles the same so talk to ur dealers they should have a flash for u
ill try to post back later when i get the chance and see if i can get that number for the flash

I have a 1998 Dakota 5 speed
and it has the same problem
alot of you guys have if i get in
and try to star it it cranks for
about 8 seconds or something,
but if I roll star it it fires right up
I kinda suspect the fuel pump
check valve because if you turn
the key 3-4 times and let the
pump run it starts better but
not perfect. I was just curious if
there is anything else that
would cause this.. thanks.
