Subject: Fuel Injectors ?
IP: Logged

Message:
My 1990 3.9 is not getting gas fron the throttle body injectors properly.
One injector is shooting out what I would call a large amout of gas and the other one shoots out nothing.
I have no fault codes and have checked the gas pressure from the pump which is a steady 15 lbs.
Took the injectors out and cleaned them, still no change.
How do you check out the injectors?
Could it be the regulator? How due you check that?
I hate to go by new injectors if Iam note shure they are the problem.
Thanks for any help or suggestions.
CJ

I'm not sure of the spec, some tbi systems operate around 9-14 psi some use 35-44psi like a multiport system. You might want to look up the specs. Basically you already checked the injectors, you just look at them and see if they a spraying a good pattern, not drippy or anything.

As far as the regulator goes if you have really high or really low fuel pressure then you know it is bad (or your pump is really weak). Also make sure the vacuum line going to it is in good shape. BTW the computer doesn't monitor fuel pressure so it can't turn on the CEL if theres a problem there.

One trick i use to help diagnose a low fuel pressure problem is to pinch off the return line for a few seconds, this will make your fuel system go up to the max pressure the pump can produce, if you start spraying fuel like normal then you know that low pressure is your problem. Try this at your own risk though because on some vehicle pressure will go up to 80psi and might damage parts of the system if there old and weak or designed only to work at 15psi.

How is the truck acting to make you think there is a problem? With no load the computer might not be turning 1 injector so it doesn't need it. If you hook up a noid light to the injector connector you can see if the computer is trying to turn it on.

you might just need to clean them.

The specs in the haynes say 14.5 psi for the throttle body which is what Iam showing.
I have pinched off the return line and pressure will go up to about 60 psi and the engine will stall.
When driving you can tell its starving for gas, when taking off from a stop the engine hesitates until it gets fuel flow at about 10-20 mph then it goes fine.
In know from looking in the throttle body from when the truck ran good that both injectors sprayed at idle,a nice fine round pattern. Now one injector sprays nothing until higher rpms and the other sprays a larger pattern with larger drops of gas.
I have put cleaner thru the tank and also taken each injector out and cleaned it.
One other thing that I noticed last night is that I took the vacum line of the regulator,I feel no vacum coming from the line.Should there be a good about of vacum going to the regulator? That line attaches to the throttle body, maybe I have a problem inside the body itself.
