Subject: Where is my starter?
IP: Logged

Message:
Hello,
I have a 98 Dakota 3.9
Forgive the auto ignorance, but I cant find my starter. I have looked briefly at the engine, and I did a search on here to try to find another post of similar nature detailing where the starter is and I cant find one, so I am beginning to think I dont have one. Just kidding.

I get several clicks when I try to turn over my engine. Clicking will continue until I turn off the ignition. It has happened maybe 4 times since Thanksgiving (when I reset the PCM to clear the CHECK ENGINE light). Sometimes I try to start it again, and it starts right up, but sometimes I have to leave it set until the next day. I am thinking I have to replace the starter/seleniod. Am I headed in the right direction? Any thoughts are welcome.

Yeah it bolts right up next to the drivers side of the tranny. If you have to just follow the battery cable that goes down that way and it will take you right to the starter.

Okay.. once again. My ignorant question has failed to stump this message board. Anyways I was able to find it and I now have it off (top bolt was such a pain in the a$$). Off to Autozone to get a replacement.

Thanks again guys. I'll let you know when I am done with me Saturday project

Okay.. The new one went in a lot faster then the old one came out. Now it seems like I am not getting 12V out of the battery. Lights are dim, and when I try to turn it over, I just hear electrical noises. to be continued.......

When you couldn't get it started before was it clicking really fast or just once when you turned the key? If its clicking fast your starter was probably ok and the battery was weak.

Another thought is that the solenoid or the starter cable is corroded, but charge that battery up first and see what happens.

As interesting as it may seem, I hope you kept the receipt from autozone. Jon is probably right. You may have just had a weak or dead battery. Often times the lower voltage will not engage the starter pinion solenoid and it will just click click click repeatedly as you hold the key down, eventually dying off as it drains whatever is left from the battery.

Hopefully you didn't give the old starter to the kiddies to start playing with. Reinstall it and find a reliable 12v power source. Ill bet my lunch money your battery is weak or dead.

Good luck.

Well... to finish the story (I hope), I went and got a new battery today, and all seems to be well. I am still concerned about my alternator though, but I will address that in another post.
Thanks again guys. Like many times before, I knew right where to go to get the answers.

To everyone, I know it sounds too simple, but always check, or clean the battery post, and clamps where the cables go to ground, or the starter, also on the ground it should have two ground wires, one to a solid ground, and the other a smaller wire to the body, make sure they are clean and tight, same with connections at the alternator. Its also good practice to check and make sure all grounds are tight, if in doubt, remove and clean then make sure everything is good and tight. That's true for lights. and starting problems, charging problems as well.
I know it sounds simple, but it can make a difference.
