I've driven lots of 2wd trucks in the snow but my dak is terrible, even with 200lbs of sand over the rear axle, and good aggressive tires the thing drives sideways down the street, any tips? Maybe a should sell it and get a 4x4 bronco for the winter.

Really? Mine did better than my old Chevy... I suppose you could get a 4x4, but thats not going to stop you from slipping all over the place.

Move the weight so that it's over the tailgate, if thats not where it is already, and stay off the gas.

Let it snow, let it snow, LET IT SNOW!

I have waited all year for some of the pretty white stuff and I am ready for it.

Although it sucks only to have 1 inch on the ground.

I want a blizzard!!!!!!

Mark

Oh yeah...I got a 4 by 4. Try moving the weight from the axle to the rear of the bed and that should help.

I had the same problem, up here in Canada. When the first snow hit the ground I couldnt drive around the block, and that was only half an inch of snow(I have 255/60/15's) I put two arctic alpin tires on steel rims on the back and a bit of weight in the box...WOW! let me tell you the dak sticks to the road like glue! They were expensive and only last 2 seasons but worth every penny.btw the new ones are 215/70/15(the more narrow and tall the better)

They suck in the snow. I just slid into a ditch today and thought my front end was screwed. Only damage was a scratch on the bumper and my plate ripped off. By the way i got towed out by some dude in a massive 4x4 bronco LOL

Yeah, sliding sucks. I slid into a snow-bank after an ice storm the first winter I had the truck. Lost a fog-lamp to that. But after that I never had problems, of course, I was a bit more careful. I did tow an S-10 out of the ditch though, that was fun. I think having the stick helped, I could always just plop it into the next gear if I started to spin.

This surprises me a lot... Both my Gen II 2wd and my Gen III 4wd handle great in the snow. The 4 wd you'd expect but the 2 wd was a great little truck! I did throw 210 lbs of sand in the back but it got around great in the snow, and 5-6 inches of it was no problem. Just get to know your machine and what it's capable of and you'll be fine.

Whatever you do (got into this one on another thread) DO NOT put the sand bags against the tailgate. You're just asking for a centrifugal force rearend slide out. Try it in an empty snowy parking lot some time, you'll see. ; )

D'oh, your right! I forgot about that. Darn it, I move to Florida and start forgetting how to drive in snow... I am so screwed when I go back to Michigan for Christmas. :0)

Yeah, I had something like 300lbs of sand right over my rear tires. It worked pretty good, but I could still spin. Especially after an ice storm, but then, nothing short of spiked-tires would help then. I'm just glad I missed that semi! Once I got into the median and in the snow, I was fine, drove right back out :0)

Todd your from Mich originally right? never did see a michigander that did not forget how to drive right in the snow. 32 years and never a ditch. Oh I've had it loose many times but never quite that loose. Drove through many snowstorms and in blizzard like conditions from T Town to Boyne Highlands, never more then 7 hrs one way and even on interstate "75" when it was "closed to traffic due to weather conditions" and had 8 or more on the ground and more commin.
Really though, most michiganders tend to drive through the stuff like it ain't even there and get there long before I do. I just wish I had their "snowballs".

I have a question; Since I have been driving a FWD car back and forth to work for the last 8 years, I have pretty much forgotten how a 4x4 handles in winter (I sold my '78 Jeep Wagoneer 401 back in 1995).

Should I add tube sand/weight to the back of my '98 Dakota RC 4x4? I don't have a limited slip, but I do have new BFG All Terrain's on it.

Thanks!
John

John: Throwing some weight over the rear axle is basically the BEST thing you can do to help traction in snow/ice (besides studded tires). But like macman said, DO NOT push the weight up against the tailgate. In a spin, all the poundage right on your ass end (.....) would throw you even worse. I'm not sure how everyone else bed is configured, but my 92 with the factory bedliner has two grooves above each of the fenders in the box. Cut a 4"x4" to length and it slips right in there. Lay the sand/weight on that and you'll be sure to keep the stuff right where it belongs. And remember, just because you are bogging down your rear end, don't think you are loosing anything. Hint: our trucks were DESIGNED to operate at their fullest fully loaded.

Thats the problem with trucks, no weight in the rear-end. I havent tried my 98 rc sport in the snow, but if its like my brothers 94 dak it is going to need some weight.

i had my 255/60/15 and an inch of snow felt like a meter. i was all over the place. i even got stuch at a stop sign (with anti slip rear end) I went out and got a set of steel rims and blizzaks, put weight in front of tail gate...it made a world of difference!! Seriously it is like night and day!! (blizzaks are 225's by 15. You don't have to get blizzaks, i'm sure any winter tire'll do!!

you wouldn't beleive how many people put smooth car tires on there suv and trucks to save a buck ant then complain about traction - you get what you pay for. if you want traction spend a buck and get a 4x4 with aggressive truck tires and learn to drive. yea i know you've been doin it for two years and yea know it all.

Well I hate to say this, well no I don't I have had NO problems driving my dak in the snow. I currently live in Kentucky, where they dont know how to remove the snow, and between the 300lb's of sand in the bed, and my Pirelli Scorpian S/T tires, I have yet to lose traction. This is by far the best truck/set o tires/ I have driven in the snow. Good luck to all who drive in the whire fluffy stuff, and keep the rubber side down

Trust me i know how to drive in the snow, i havent put it in a ditch or anything but the thing gets way worse traction then my other vehicles as far as accelerating and going up hills and it does have good all terrain l/t tires on it. It handles almost as bad in the snow as my 4x4 with the super swampers on it. If you ever driven with aggressive mud tires on snow and ice you'll know what i'm talking about!

weight in the rear is definetely a factor when driving in snow! i live in northern cali i frequently visit the sierra snow to snowboard, last year i had a tool box with lots of heavy tools.i was shocked how well my 2wd dakota did in the snow,it was like a 4wd!this year during a big storm a few months ago i decided to venture on up for my first new season snowboarding trip.well im almost there i decide to pass a slow camaro i go to change lanes thats when my truck just spun forever, till i hit the sandbar, dude i was pissed!well to make a long freakin story short, the reason i spun out was because about five months ago i removed my tool box,so this season when i went up there was no weight,i didnt even think about untill i spun out, ohhhh duuuuh no weight drrrrrrr!! next trip i will have either my tool box on or sandbags!!........and chains lol

We had a pretty bad ice storm in TN i guess 2 years ago right about christmas time and I had just gotten my dakota about a month before that and i drove that thing all over town without a problem. However on wet snowy grass with no limited slip i did have trouble. I was surprized that in the grass was the only time i really needed weight. Actually looking back I think if I had been better wth the clutch I wouldn't have had as much trouble as i did.
