Can anyone tell me what they have used to make home brew cold air intakes? I am just curious. I have a couple of ideas I want to do, but would just like some input.
Thanks guys

I used 3" pvc and painted it with heat resistant paint and rubber plumbing connections that go to the intake hat. I've had it on the truck for a couple months now, and no sign of any melting or anything like that.

If you click on the link in my sig and then go to performance mods, you'll see pics and a description of how I made my aluminized steel intake.

Hey man, I am sure that you can wip up a home brew job. I did. Get some 3in PVC. Some rubber 3in connecters for Lowes. Cut the thing to fit where you want. Lock it all down good. Put your big K&N cone filter on the end closest to the grille of the truck. Coat the tubing with heat resustant paint.

Mine has been in for a few months too and I have had no problem. I live in S. Fla, it is hot as hell here. And I have had no melting PVC probs.
The only prob with the aluminum is that it could heat up and almost be an air heater. Not good for HP. I am sure it looks really cool though. Give it a try. Your be amaized with the results.
Good Luck. Joe E.

I am doing something very similar to intense99dak but I am using mandral bent exhaust pipe. I will probably put the air filter between the front bumper and the front wheel spash housing for a true cold air set up. Does require drilling a hole in the inside fender of my new truck is what I don't like.

Master7777,

On the home page, click on Mods (left side menu) and then Performance (again left side menu). You'll see it listed under Cool Air Intake.

On the question of the aluminzed steel heating up, I have not felt any loss of performance because of it. I also ran a round open air filter before going to my current set-up and I could definitely feel a loss with that thing during the hot months. Not so with my current one though ... and that's with the extra heat from the headers as well.

CW - I wanted mine mandral bent, but the shop I took it to said they couldn't do it :-( I was skeptical about how much weld would be inside the tube, but they did a great job and kept it to a minimum.

My shop can not mandrel bend the pieces either but they have a stock of prebent pieces. I have a mig welder that I will weld things together with. Yours does look very good though.

Here's what mine looks like:

http://www.quickd.com/images/intake.jpg

I got it from quickd. When I ordered it, there was no place locally to get K&N filters, and they were over a hundred dollars to order in. Now the Canadian Tire has them on the shelves, on sale right now for about $70. After I installed it I thought how easy it would be to make one if you acquired the mandrel bent stainless. I know this has nothing to do with performance, but it looks really nice when I shine it up. :)

I bought a K&N Drop-in filter for my Dakota, but wanted to improve intake flow more.
However, since I had already invested in the drop-in, I wanted to keep it.
I used a fernco elbow, a short PVC, and a ferno coupler.
I then used a 4" plastic sewer pipe fitting with the flange end trimmed off
inside of the factory airbox. This is connected to a 4" aluminum duct that is
routed to the grill. The rubber flap on the passenger side has been removed, and I used a plastic fitting that converts from 4" round to 3"x4" rectangle.
This fits in the opening where the rubber flap used to be.
The only problem here was the airconditioning line.
I had to cut a slit in the plastic fitting to slip over the ac line.
Now I get "cold-air" input directly from the grill of the truck.
I also added an aluminum sheet that goes from the radiator to the factory air box.
This is in place to keep the radiator fan heat awa away from the aluminum ducting.
Total cost for all of this (excluding the K&N Drop-in which I already had was ~ $25.00)
