I plan on installing an electric fan and an adjustable thermostat for my 2001 3.9L V6. I have heard that the Black Magic 150 http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=216 is a good choice to go with, but the price is around $200. Thats a little more than Im looking to spend for a fan. There are other fans for sale like http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?part=20675. Are there any suggestions to a certain fan I should look into and where I could get it at a good price?

If you buy one without a shroud, go to some place like U-Wrench-It and pickup a shroud that is the right diameter. Cut it up so it roughly fits.

Fan shrouds make the fan MUCH more effective. Thats part of the reason the BM150 is so popular.

I had the black magic 150 on mine I bought it back in March of this year from Summit it ran fine till I started pulling my boat this summer and I had the 180 T-stat in at the time too. I took it off and went back to the stock fan and it ran fine.If your not doing a lot of towing it would be fine.

One other thing to consider:

I have read in numerous posts here that the Black Magic fan set-up can add up to 2MPG to your Dakota. If it adds even half of that, it wouldn't take long to pay for the added expense of the fan. And it would keep paying off.

A BW is on my "to do" list in the near future.

AS Bob said mine wouldn't cool enough during the hot months with A/C on and/or pulling my boat. I put one on from a '95 Mustang 5.0/ with shroud. I did have to special order a 70 amp relay from JC Whitney. It melted 2 regular 50 amp relays.

Ive had the BM150 on my 96 3.9 for over a year, and for the price, it was well worth it. although I dont tow, I have not had any overheating probs, and have only had an increase in my MPG and performance. It seems to be the case that these mods do react differently for each dak though.

I still have mine the box it came in and the invoice from Summit and instructions and all the hardware that came with it may have to add some wire. if some one wants to buy it. It was used for 3 months for $175.that includes shipping in the continental US.

What I would like to know is should I invest the 200 for a Black Magic 150 which is around 200 bucks? Or should I just get a 100 dollar fan by perma cool and a 40 dollar electric thermostat? I believe the black magic already has a thermostat on the actual shround, IM not sure. Any opinions would be appreciated.

The Black Magic 150 has a T-Stat built in.
