“The Dodge Dakota”

Everything from the glistening silver paint to the low deep rumble of the dual exhaust system, makes the Dodge Dakota my favorite vehicle. With its quick throttle response, it will throw you back into your seat just from taking off from a stop light. With its engine power and its pretty women attracting ability, the Dodge Dakota is by far the most fun and exciting vehicle to drive. The Dodge Dakota is much more than what meets the eye, infact many people see a Dodge Dakota truck as just being that, a truck. There are many different characteristics about this truck that most people do not know about. For example, there are three different type generations, five different types of engines, and four different types of styles.
Generation three Dodge Dakotas are best described as the newest body model out. They consist of a wider, heavier, cleaner looking body then generations past. The generation three years range from a 1996 Dodge Dakota to a 2002. With the newer 2002 Dodge introduced the newer package known as the SXT package. This package was added to the line up consisting of the Sport,SLT, Rt, and base model. The new SXT package is a step up from the base model with keeping the more affordable close to base price. There is also the option to be able to get 4 doors, or as Dodge calls it, the option of the Quad Cab. They also offer the extended cab on the two door models that allows extra passengers behind the driver and passenger seats. And then of course there is always the option of the lighter regular cab. With all models, except the base model, there is the interior option of either leather or cotton seats. There are also different options when deciding which seats for the Dakota. There is the option to be able to have the 40/20/40 bucket seats or the straight across old style bench seat. While most Dakotas with more cab room then the regular cab do come equipt with the 40/20/40 bucket seats. The regular cab is where the real option of which seats to get comes into play. The SLT models come fully loaded. Everything from leather interior to a 10 disc CD changer comes in these top end Dakotas. The sport model offers more of a sporty suspension along with sporty wheels. The R/T also known as Racing Technology, is the Dakota that is equipped with special suspension components, bigger 20 inch wheels, street racing cosmetics, and also the biggest 5.9L 360ci v8 engine that Dodge puts into any mid-size truck.
Speaking of engines, the Dodge Dakota has many different engines to offer. While the generation two and three Dakotas share four of the same fuel injected engine types, the 2.5L inline 4 cylinder, the 3.9L v6, 5.2L v8, and the 5.9L v8. The first generation Dakotas however had the same engine types as the generation two Dakotas, except that they were carberauted and not yet fuel injected. With the introduction of the 4.7L v8 in 1999, Dodge added a new big v8 engine with about the same horsepower as the big 5.9L with out the pain of getting hit at the gas pumps. In fact, the new 4.7L v8 came really close to getting the same amount of miles per gallon as its older cousin the 3.9L v6.
The Dodge Dakota by far surpasses the medium of all the other competition in the mid sized truck industry. In fact, Dodge is the only manufacture that offers a big v8 in a mid-sized truck. Ford offers only the 4.0L v6 which is still out performed by the heavier 3.9L v6 Dakota. Chevy and GMC also offer a bigger v6 then the Dakota. The biggest engine that they come equipped with is the 4.3L v6. There are also other foreign mid-sized trucks, but they don’t even compare to the American made trucks. Although the Dodge Dakota has a smaller v6 then its competition, with some minor modifications, such as a less restricted air filter and a high flow muffler, the Dodge Dakota v6 will easily be able to beat the other v6 competition. When you line up the Dodge Dakota at the race track, equipped with either the 4.7L v8 or the biggest 5.9L v8, when the lights turn green and the tires start to squeal, the competition will be left in the dust and will be seeing nothing but the Dodge emblem and the Dodge Dakota tail lights.

That must have been writen by someone who just bought a dakota and has a hard-on. While most of those facts and OPINIONS were true, i just wanted to point out some that were not. As far as I knew the 3rd gen"round body" dakota came out in 1997 as far as i know and not 1996. Also i have a friend with a SLT and his dakota has cloth seats, the SLT model is a trim line that has many options but all that were mentioned above do not come standard. And as for the R/T model coming stock with 20 inch wheels, i'm yet to see one of those! The only 20 inch wheels that Dodge makes come on the Ram with a 5 lugnut pattern compared to the dakota's 6 lug patern, although i have seen an aftermarket "knock-off" of a 20" R/T style whell, i really don't think that you can get them from Dodge. I'm not trying to be a dick just trying to help you get some of your facts straight.

One more thing should be pointed out. "R/T" does not stand for "Racing Technology."

the gen3 started in 97
both the ram and gmc and even the ford 150 have newer bodies
Dodge has other mid sizes trucks? "Dodge puts in any mid size truck"
My buddies' 4.7 gets 15 hiway, my 3.9 gets 21.5 hiway, same body style, Not even close to "really close", he goes 330 miles to empty and I go 473 a diff of 143 miles per tank
the R/T designation means Road/Track and dates back to the '60's
With these glaring errors you should have got an "F"

hmmm...did you get made fun of after you presented that?...i mean...there's nothin wrong with getting a hard on when you stare at a souped up dropped RT with 4 in. dual tips and 4 10's in the carpeted bed...but writing a paper on it?...that's goin too far...theres 2 kinds of dakota obsessions...the cool one...where you dump your biotch to soup up your kota and you wash it 5 times a week and take out roughly...5 or 6 ricers in that time...and then theres the bad kind of dakota obsession...basically...you dont own one...but have posters of them everywhere and you WRITE PAPERS AT SCHOOL ON THEM and then you get made fun of and cant get a biotch to dump for the truck you dont have...ok thats it...

yep, new style in 97.
No dakota came on "dubs" max was 17" I have seen.
The do have base model sl, then slt, the sport, and I guess now sxt or whatever, then the r/t which I belive was refured to as the old "charger R/T" which I do think is road/track.
And didnt reference to when they swapped to the magnum engines, rather the cast iron block ones.
Plus possibly could have mentioned its "brother" the Durango when refuring to the cab sizes.

Seriously, I would assume you are at least 16 in that few people frequent Dakota sites unless they drive one but your paper sucks so hard that it would bring shame to 16 year old. Let alone all the technical inaccuracies. Comes with 20inch rims...What a piece.

WOW!! That paper sucks! You shouldn't be writing a paper on something you obviously haven't researched at all. Maybe some day you will make it to High School.

R/T-Road and Track. Though sometime between the late sixties and the mid seventies the ads referred to R/T as Rapid Transit.

Yeah, I've heard that too...

ddave, that doesnt make any sense, line up a 94 and a 95 dakota, same body style, same color, same trim, etc. and then turn your head and have somebody shuffle them, turn around,is there more than a 50% chance you are going to find your 95? no...
91-96 are the same thing, for the most part, except in 92 a few minor things changed.

not all generation one's are carbuerated. mine's a 1990 3.9 and its fuel injected. Also, it doesn't have the same engine as the generation two's. gen 1's are "premagnum" engines and from what i've heard there's a $hit load of difference between them. well maybe not a $hut load but enough of a difference to give the gen 2's 50 more horsepower then the gen 1's. hhhhhhhm there was something else i wanted to say....oh yea this paper sucked. good topic though

Come on guys, I agree the paper was a little untrue in parts, and the guy is a little obsessed but I am sick and tired of imature pricks who complain about everything people write on this site. There is a lot of knowledge on this site but this one is one of the lamest I've ever read. You dip$hits need to grow up and cut the kid some slack! And hell if you know so much why don't you spend the time to make the correct article over a Dakota and send it to all the other wanna be bad ass truck sites!
