I have a 98 Dodge Dakota V6. It is extended cab,2 wheel drive, and a automatic. I plan on taking it to the Track this Friday with my friends. My friends want me to race them, but i was wondering what my Dakota could do in the 1/4 ahead of time. Iam hoping that some of you V6 guys have already run your trucks. If not i will post my times on the forum. Oh yeah some tips on how to leave the line best would be welcomed. Iam 17 years old and love my Dodge! And so dose everyone else.

depends on what differential you have. i'm guessing w/ a 255 width tire on there you shouldn't have too many traction problems, so you could prolly power brake it up to about 1700-2k rpms, and let off the brake and go WOT. other than that just gas her. i'm not sure what times you could expect. look for 16's or so i would think. if you feel like it you could remove the jack and the spare(would change the traction a bit)for weight savings, but it's not gonna do a whole lot. g'luck.

Big Ben, I managed 17.268 best run back in the spring when it was cooler, with only the K&N cool air & 180 stat on it. Middle of summer I ran it with upgraded ignition but in the heat and the best I could do was around two tenths slower, with lots of traction problems (stock tire size). First run I was still spinning when I grabbed 2nd and pulled over 18 seconds - yuck! I'm thinking about running mine in a month or so too ... now that I have the IAT Adjuster and Gibson Superflow tho I'll probably turn the former off if it's 70 or under. That first time, BTW, I ran a friend of mine with a V6 CC Auto '98. He did one second worse than I in spite of tb, headers, duals, cat, and ignition, but he thinks it's a tuning problem. Hopefully this helps give you an idea of what to expect.

Good luck at the track; show me up! It's really pretty fun! And hey! What's everyone else running?

I hope the cc Dakota that you are talking about had stock tires on it. I have R/T rims with 255/60/17 BFG Comp T/A. I can power Break up to about 2500rpm with out to much tire spin off the line. Do you think i could posabaly do a high 17. The air temp right now here in Warner Robins, Ga is about 60-70 at night. So i hope i dont get my a$$ beat up to bad by the cars iam racing. Get this, my friends that iam racomg will be racing there cars, a 98 Mustang GT, 90 Chevy 350 SS, 97 240 sx, 95 Z-28, and a 00 Dakota R/T. So wish me luck, and i will get back with yall, More power to the V6's.

That CC actually had 8.5x15 wheels. Probably 9-inch wide tires. But with all that performance stuff, he dynoed at something like 2 horses over stock. Don't sweat it - go out, race your truck, and have a good time! How many people out there have ever even run down a 1/4 mile dragstrip? I have video footage of my summer run, and I kept racing sports cars! Looked like a freakin' turtle chasing grasshoppers! But to see my steed on video, so composed and resolute ... my truck didn't beat the muscle cars - big surprise! It's done stuff they wouldn't even dream of. But it sure looked good, and I can't wait to go again. There's a 4.0 Mazda with exhaust out there that hung with me timewise though that guy never mustered the courage to shoulder up with me, and I can't wait to blow its time outta the water next visit!

The best story, though, was when I was running my buddy. We got outta synch at the line to race, and I ended up with a brand new Mustang that beat me nicely. I pulled off the track to see my friend running a top fueler! He said to the guy at the start line "I don't want to race this guy!" The guy said "Don't worry, he'll be past you in no time so there's no danger." He said "I know, that's my point!!!" LOL... It's all relative.

I have been running a estimated 15.5 to 16 with my 92 dodge dakota. 3.9 auto for me and im suprising a lot of people, everything that i have put on my truck i have felt a very big difference i have the msd ignition box the msd blaster coil 2, k&n air intake and a borla exaust three inch pipes all the way through. I went from a flowmaster 2 chamber to borla and felt a lot of difference and a smoother ride. I have dayton tires with 17x8 rims on that never let go of the road. You should do pretty good at the track, im only 18 and i have been racing for about 2 months and its the most addictive thing in the world

Damn the world. Hehe I am interested in speed and trucks, however I didn't quite get the right feel from the v6 dakota I test drove before I bought my truck. Basically I got a great deal on an auto v6 ram with a/c that I couldn't get with a dak without paying more money.

This ram sure is nice though and it's flufing huge. But it's slow, 1000miles now maybe it will pick up in a little while but I will defiantly be putting a s/c on it maybe nos as well but ahh who has the cash for those things right now. Argg I could have bought a dakota.

Oh well I love my ram but it's all slowness.

Excellent, Big Ben! Funny how the full size trucks with their V8's still measure out to our V6's. More power ... more weight! I ran similar to a Ford F250, for example. Congrats on your runs!

wade, that's really impressive. My father has a '92 CC V6 auto and that thing with 60-80K miles on it is a total dog compared to mine. Tows and hauls like a champ, tho; hope mine does as well next time it's required.

Those are some very nice times. I hope i can get down to the track this friday again. I forgot to tell yall this last week, i had 3/4 of a tank of gas, my spare and all my tools in the cab of the truck. I think i could have knocked 2 tenths off my time if i had taken the time to lighten up my truck. OH well, it will have to wait for next time. Still trying to clean off the rubber off my truck, wow theres alot of rubber under there!:)

See my early post about mods (electric fan, asp pulley, and Carsounds Cat also on the truck but not included in previous post).

BigBen,
Try not to lay down too much rubber, bad for times. Your truck has very easy low 17 potential! Work on your 60', 2.2s is about right for street tires. Every tenth reduced in the 60' will reduced the 1/4 times by 2 tenths. Jay is on the right track, what's your secret? I haven't been able to get 2.2s. 2.2s should get me to about 16.1 in the 1/4. A buddy ('70 Nova)of mine ran a 16.0 (non-corrected) with a 2.7 60'(first time to track). He worked on his launch and ran a 15.1 (non-corrected) with a 2.3 60'. It's all in the launch.

set your rear tire pressures to about 24 psi and run your fronts up a bit higher say like around 40 psi. I made that run with everything still on my truck ( spare tire, fiberglass tonneu, and tailgate still on ). a set of universal traction bars helped a bit but i found that they sometimes bogged me off the line so i took them off. I launch at 2000 rpm and do not burnout before the run but i slip my clutch when i'm leaving the line as to not spin my tires too much. Also finding the right shift point on the truck is a very critical part of the run too, the object is to shift high enough in the hp peak to keep the engine from falling below it's torque peak.... ok for example: if your hp peak is 4800rpm and your torque peak is 3200rpm then you wanna shift as far over 4800 rpm as needed so that the engine maintains a speed within or right around 3200rpm after the shift is completed.

hope that helps
jay
