Subject: Anyone had this problem?

Message:
This last weekend I went to start my truck to go out of town and it wouldn't start, I tried cranking on it, no go - so I let it sit overnight and tried it the next day. Still nada, I put the go pedal to the floor and cranked on it, would not start. It would crank fine, fuel pump was working, could smell gas in the exhaust pipe, but would not start, I even kicked the bumper a couple of times, nothin:-) Towed it to the dealer, they hooked every computer, sensor, and probe up to it, cranked it a few times and everything showed as working properly, no error codes then the dumb thing starts and they couldn't get it to act up again. After six hours of working on it and checking stuff they have no clue as to what the deal was. Has anyone had this type of thing happen before? I've got a 97 3.9.

Holy water sounds like the best thing to use to me. But what I don't understand is that the dealer is supposed to tell in the last 200 starts what your vehicle has done. At least that's what they told me. They should be able to tell what the problem was at least. Greg

Wouldn't want any other!

I have a 96' 3.9 and it doesn't start occasionally. I turn the key and it just sits there not doing a thing. I found that if you put it in N, then turn the key, it starts right up. I don't know what's wrong with it, but until it doesn't start when I do that, I'm not going to worry about it.

Yeah, that sounds good, holy water, a cross and a baseball bat! The dealer told me that when they checked the computer memory it came up with no stored errors. They told me it should have started, as far as they can tell everything was working properly and all I could think was "no sh*t it should have started!" I live 30 miles out of town and now I'm afraid to drive the truck home and be stranded again, stupid truck...Oh, they said that they would leave the file open...gee thanks!

Had this same problem in my 98. One day it would start, then die, wouldnt start for a day or two, then fire right back up. Took mine to the dealer as well, again couldnt find out any problems. Turned out the PCM took a crap. The coil driver side of the PCM was what went bad, hence not sending a signal to the coil, new computer fixed it. It might not be this, but normally if it were a crank or cam sensor a scan tool would have picked it up.

An intermittent electrical problem will definitely do this type of thing. If a lead or a circuit trace breaks or a solder joint opens up, it can work/not work depending on temperature, vibration, whatever. It could very well be the PCM. I hate intermittent problems, they're a pain in the A** to find and fix...

I don't think the steering wheel lock had anything to do with it, the truck would crank over, it just acted like it wasn't getting spark or fuel. The pcm idea is interesting. Is there anyway to check for that?

I have a similar problem. I truck just cranks but won't start. It's extremely frustrating considering I may have to shell out a wade of cash just before the holidays.

New development in the dakota saga: After the dealer had the truck earlier this week it has been running great, went out to run errands today, would only run if I had the gas pedal to the floor. I called the shop and they sent a guy out with a computer and hooked it up, after he commanded it to modulate the idle control motor he could feel it buzzing so he tapped it with his finger, now it works!?! Something screwy is going on with that idle motor. They just replaced it 2 weeks ago! They suspect a bad harness connection, really hope it works, an ad is beginning tomorrow in the paper for my truck to sell. I don't really think it would be a good impression if someone comes out to test drive it and it won't start!
