I have had a 92 Dakota, 3.9L Magnum, 4x4, LE, ClubCab, Auto since 1999. No major problems. The bushing in the distributor issue has gone out twice, but nothing more than that...

I have a two part question.
1. Do all the 3.9's sound a little loose? By that I mean, it almost sounds like a deisel when driving under mild acceleration or going up hills. At 1800-2200 RPM's, it sounds like there is a vibration in the exhaust. On top of that, if I downshift while going down a hill, it will backfire all the way down. I don't know if it is a manifold leak, a timing chain issue or what. I have had it in to my local dealer, and they are worthless. They say it runs like it should and there are no problems. If this is how they are supposed to run, I have a hard time beleiving they would be so popular. (They don't mind charging an $120 diagnostic fee either...) As it stands right now, take-offs are a bit slow and hesitant, but once it gets up above 1500 RPMs, it picks up and does ok... Still can't beat my wife's 96 Blazer, but I want to...

2. In about 3 months, I own my kota outright and for the last 4 months, it has been my 3rd car since I commute 75 miles per day. I want to do the following, who should I look to?:
a. Engine upgrades
b. Body Lift
c. Suspesion Lift
d. Shock upgrades
e. Tire/Wheel upgrades
This is my first kota project, so I need some guidance/help.

Jake
Reno, NV

I'm no expert but I have a 92 2WD with a 3.9 and I'll share what wisdom I have.

Depending on how "fast" you want to go. Autolite 3923 plugs, K&N, high flow exhaust, 180 T-stat are a good start. If you want to go exreme check out Bernd and Intense39s rides. They're GenIIIs but 3.9s are alike throughout the years.

Body lifts are cheap and at least you have one. 2WDs don't. good idea though. Some don't like them but they're better than nuttin'.

There is only one suspension lift and it's expensive, I only know of one guy on here with it and I guess it involves cutting a cross-member out. If you want to spend like $2K that's up to you. Trailmaster 4" I believe.

Check out the off-road board and do a search. A wealth of knowledge awaits. But please don't do this again on every boar

Look around for wheels and for the tires again go to the off road board and do a search or too. Your limited on wheels if your truck is a 6 lug and it probably is but there are some sweet ones out there.

Well, there's my .02 so I hope I helped a bit. And good luck and most of all. ENJOY YOUR DAK! :)

92dakotahd,

Thanks for the info on the 2nd question, I still need assistance/direction on the first... Here it is again...

The noise your hearing is Normal especially when you lift off the gas and its backfires your hearing is also normal its due to the 3" exhaust pipe that runs underneath the truck I think this is why the 94-96 have the 2 1/8" or 2 1/4" exhaust pipe it was a way to quiet down the NVH

That's not the engine backfireing I think. It's the pressure equalizing out in the pipes with the engine braking. I might be wrong though. 1800-2200 is a point at which the exhaust does conflict in a way, I'd have to have you listen to my truck to understand but it's nothing to worry about. That's just a point of increased vibration.

Check out "Magnum V6 - Timing Chain TSB" (found on SpeedTweaks - Tips and Tricks webpage). I had the tensioner installed on my '92 V6 Dakota at 80,000 miles. BINGO! This is the first time my truck has not rattled. It has had a clacking/clicking noise since new - I always thought it was lifter/rocker noise. But now it it very quite - at last!
