Not much advantage to 1.6 RR's other than better MPG unless you are going with a custom cam grind

The 1.7's are the ones that give the extra power

if the v8s hp increases 20-25 and the v10 increases 30-35 what does the v6 get and at what rpms do you feel it? if i have 100,000 miles on the engine, is it really worth the $350?

justa4x2,

Since the 3.9 is a 5.2 minus 2 cylinders the power gain should be 3/4 of the v8's or 15 hp(1.7RR). Power is gained through out the rpm range with the quoted increase happening a little past peak hp. It helps put less wear no the motor so it is always a good idea. Other than a nos kit it is the best overall power increase per dollar.

I really have not seen any change in my MPG good or bad, I get 17-18 most of the time in town & mixed and 22-23 all Highway.

justa4x2:

If you have a 100k miles you may want to do new valve springs and/or rebuild the heads just to be safe with the 1.7's

power hungry :

I agree with you, that was my thinking about 15-20 HP out of the 1.7's for the V6

Dan, if I may steal a little of your thunder here ;-), Sam at Socaldakotas.com sells the Crower stainless steel roller rockers for $350, which includes shipping. I bought a set of 1.7's from him about a month ago, but haven't installed them yet. I'm waiting to get a few more miles on my truck before I tear the valvetrain apart.

If you're going to go to the trouble and expense of installing rockers, you should also do an intake, throttle body, and exhaust at the least. I'm doing an Intense Performance intake (Dan has the K&N), and an F&B throttle body. I've installed headers, but I'm not looking for anything out of them until all that other stuff goes on. I've got a Magnaflow also, but it sounds like *%$^ on a V6, and will soon be replaced by a Super Turbo or something else. Since I had the money at the time, I'm also trying a set of MSD wires, plus the obligatory distributor cap, rotor, and a set of NGK plugs. After that, I lust after a set of 4.10 gears. After that, I lust after a new truck with a V8.

Drew, the gizmos that move the valves up and down are the rocker arms. They're installed on top of the cylinder heads, which are the big iron things under the valve covers. The rocker arms are moved back and forth...like a seesaw...by the pushrods, which are pushed up and down by the lobes on the camshaft as the engine crankshaft rotates. Each valve...exhaust and intake...has its own rocker arm. The rocker arm pushes the valve open, then lets it close. The stock rocker arms are stamped steel and work by rubbing on top of the valve stem. Roller rockers use a needle bearing fulcrum rather than a friction pivot...the part in the center that the rocker arm moves up and down on...less heat and resistance...and they also have a needle bearing tip that rolls across the surface of the valve stem...again, less friction, less heat, less wear. The 1.7 ratio roller rockers have a little different geometry than the stockers...which give a little extra lift and duration to the valve opening/closing, without requiring a new cam. That's about it...

I'd like to know if this mod, with 1.7 rockers, will improve anything? I've heard a lot about this where it will give an extra 25 hp, but I dont think it's that drastic. Anyone out there see any imporvements with the 1.7's? Greg

No, the magnum motors don't have roller rockers, they have roller lifters. The rockers are plain old, stamped steel...
