Subject: How to fix up my V6?

Message:
I'm new to this board and to fixing up trucks for that matter. I've got a 97' V6 3.9L 5 speed dakota and I would like to try and get a little more acceleration and speed out of my truck. A friend has fixed up his V8 Ram and says if I put a new computer chip and a dual exhaust on my truck I could tell a big difference. I just wondered if anyone has any advice. I appreciate any help.

The Dual exhaust won't really help. But a new exhaust will, a higher-flowing muffler can't hurt. If you go true duals though, you'll loose to much backpressure and won't make any low-end torque.

Some sort of cold-air intake compliments the exhaust mod really well. Those two are like staple modifications that need to be done ASAP. Look into maybe a new Cap/Rotor with brass contacts as well, shouldn't be too expensive there. From what I have seen, the Accel coil makes only a marginal change in the idle, so it's probally not really worth it.

I love my JET II chip, but it seems to be a love/hate thing. I wouldn't spend more than $80 on a used one though, and definatly woudln't buy one new.

Get a 180 degree Thermostat, it cools the engine down a bit and it runs better/makes slightly better power. All at the expense of a marginal amount of emmisions... you'll still pass. Dodge has the 195 installed to get the emissions rating as low as possible. I saw a gas milage improvement on the 180 as well.

Can't say anything about underdrive pullys, mines been sitting in the closet for three months... I really don't have the time to install it. Hopefully soon though!

Check out the speedtweaks.net Tips & Tricks section. The TPS Voltage mod is always a winner. Since you've got an older truck, you may want to clean the TB out, since it's probally pretty gunked up. If you have a dremel and are feeling adventurious, you can port the TB as well. There are some tutorials online, but I don't have any links handy. Ask around on that. I like the IAT sensor relocation (relocated mine into the cold-air intake just behind the K&N), but if you don't want to do that, the IAT Adjuster plans they have up supposedly work -real- good.

It all depends on what you want to spend! Those are budget mods, but you can get pretty expensive. If you have the cash, the 1.7 Roller Rockers are a must have.

And after all of that if you still feel like blowing off some cash, get some higher gears (392's or 410's) and maybe some JBA headers and a high flow cat, then maybe some drag radials to put that extra torque to the pavement.

In my opinion, a Mopar Pcm is the best bang for the buck. Then, a v8 tb with a ported intake. Then, exhaust. Then, FMS injectors. Then, intake. That is just from my personal experience.
