Go to a small independant shop, usually they are more willing to fix stuff than just replace it. I've seen the same problems on other vehicles where it was a simple $200 fix.

You know, alot of that $200 is labor, in fact almost all of it is... If you are capable of doing stuff like that yourself, you really should.. My cousin is a trans. mechanic, My dakota has the Exact same prob as yours jay, and he said the part would only be about $35... But if your smart, just order the complete rebuild kit, that only costs around $80 at JCWhitney... If you buy the part, then have a shop install it, you'll get it a little cheaper, but not much... Good Luck

thanks for the fast replies, Kracker what part are you referring to? i can most likely do my own labor, just not sure exactly what to replace. thought about rebuild kit, but don't have a whole lot of down time to play with (only vehicle...)
thanks again for your help.

Lol, I don't really know what part it was, he didn't say, he just said that "it" was $35... Sorry i can't tell ya, but you might try emailing someone who is a trans mechanic, you might be able to find a website dedicated to this, and you could most likely find the part there. O, and if your sporting a manual trans. I imagine the prices would be even cheaper than what I listed, because those were auto trans. kits... But ya, try looking for trans rebuild sites, and they should b able to tell ya

Have you tried shifting to Drive first, then Reverse? Once in awhile on a cold start I go from Park to Reverse and it won't move. Shifting into a forward gear and then reverse works - feels like a linkage problem (though I've had the recall done).

Sounds like a failed direct clutch.

Just replaced the tranny on my '89 Dakota....freaking nightmare. The reverse went out just like described above in earlier post. There is no easy fix. The clutch went bad. Forward gears slipped "a little" when cold but for the most part drove fine forward. Had a hard time finding a used transmission here in Orlando, Florida. Finally found one for $585.00. The toughest part was accessing the manifold bolts and removing the manifold part of exhaust system. Good luck.
