Okay, I know this subject has been beat to death over and over again...but this time I want the truth!

My wife asked me what I want for Christmas this year and of course I told her NOTHING. I have everything that most 35 year olds want or need.

Okay...so after I thought about this I thought I want cat back duals. I have priced around a few shops and they are going for 175-250.

So this is what I want from you. The truth...does dual exhaust do anything for a V6? Milage increase? Make loud noises? I have a friend of mine who has a full size RAM with cat back duals and his truck sounds awesome. Still have yet to see a 6 have duals. Am I wasting my money?

Honest answers from people who have all ready done the cat back duals.

Thanks.

Mark

If you are looking for performance gains, NO duals wont do much for you (to much loss of back press). Dyno results have proven that a 2.5" singl pipe has the most gain. Sound wise, only at idle will it sound Ok. These V6 engines are an odd fire eng and will always sound ricey to some extent. If you do go with duals make sure the muffler is a 2.5" inlet and two 2" outlets to regain some of the backpressure. I use a flowmaster 50SUV series and it did wonders for performance gains, but everyone has there preferences on quality muffs.

Hey 98FlameRdDak,

I got the glasspack single in dual-outs
and it sounds great. Couldn't tell you
about the peformence i got or lost from
it, because it was my first mod and got
it for looks and sound.

A tip is, if you go with duals, get stainless steel tips, They cost a little more but are deff worth the extra cash. The chrome tips rust the
first week

now you know thats..................

Ihad most of my mods done before I put on my duals. They do sound good but here's the deal. I put on my JBA Headers, but still had the stock exhaust. This produced great performance-but only in the top end. It made the low end verrrry slow and sluggish. Then I added the Gibson split y(duals). It seemed to even out everything w/ more power than before. But I lost some of the top end, but gained some low end. Hope this helps!

This info is all good...thanks to all those that replied. I guess since I don't race my truck at a local track each week, what I was trying to base my decision on was; will I get better gas milage?

While I admit I didn't do my homework prior to buying this truck, it pains me to see that at every 222 miles, it is time to fill the gas tank up.

While my Dak is a 98 CC with 4 by 4, I have a friend who owns the same year truck that is not a 4by4 and gets about 17 miles to the gallon. There is only a 425 pound difference between our trucks and yet his truck gets better milage than I do. I have done most of the mods on that were posted by others.

Relocated IAT sensor, changed the TPS voltage, went with Autolite plugs, K&N Filter, etc. The only 2 mods I have yet to do is change the TB and modify the exhaust. When I bought the truck I was getting 12-13 miles to the gallon. After the mods, still getting 12-13 miles to the gallon. So no matter what I do to the engine, I am still getting the same crappy gas milage. Which was why I wanted input on cat back duals.

Perhaps I should take the money that it would cost to install cat back duals and put it towards gas purchases in the future.

I'm surprised you only get 222 miles to the tank. I'm a 20 yr old with a lead foot and i get 250-260 runing the highway. And can get up to 310 if i relax and use the cruse control. Are you sure your only getting 222? It just sounds really low to me. The only things i've done to my truck is, a homemade intake with a K&N, relocated the intake sensor thingy, got some better wires, plugs, and my exhaust system. I think you might have a bigger problem if your having that low of MPG.

About the exaust. I have a vortex single in, dual out on my V6 and it sounds great! I havent noticed a huge loss in milage, and the power is there in the higher end. TRUE, you do loose low end, but there are many ways to make up for that with other mods. If you need a GREAT place to get a exaust system let me know. I got my complete cat back with hangers and all pipes for 140 even! They are really great guys too! Good luck with the dak.

The headers and the less back pressure sounds right on. I wouldn't go headers just yet, unless you're doing a lot more to the engine itself.

I went with the Flowmaster, and dual out (single in). I agree, 2.5" in, 2" out is the way to go.

BUT...(always the but), it all depends if you want to turn your truck into a speed machine, or just 'liven' it up a bit.

222 does sound a bit low, no doubt. I get 16-17, and I have quite a heavy cap on in the back.(makes it feel like a tank, what can I say..I've come to like it)

Okay, there's more to chew on.

At 3/4 of a tank of fuel, I average around 222 miles. If I let the tank go lower than 3/4 it costs a small fortune to refill. I have thought about replacing the O2 sensors but they seem to be working (I assume) since I get no check engine lights. On the average however I am getting 12-13 miles to the gallon.

Example of how I am calculating milage.

I filled the tank the other day with 17.8 gals of gas. I drove 223 miles. 223 divided by 17.8 comes to 12.5 miles to the gallon.

This is consistant...I can drive like an old man or an indy race driver and I still get about the same...no more, or no less.

Just trying to increase my milage somehow.

400 pounds DOES make a big difference with these engines. I have a 99 extended cab 4x2 V-6 and get about 16 mpg. When i throw about 200 pounds of weight in the back for winter traction, it drops down to 13 to 14 miles a gallon!!! These engines are already over-worked and any extra weight makes a big difference in performance and mpg.

I have a 92 CC V6 with about 135K on the odo. Cat back duals with no mufflers(this is no race truck) and I think it sounds awesome. Tips are coming off the 45s through 22"x3" tips. With the exception of towing a trailer with a 21 foot Checkmate on board I get about 18 miles average(mostly highway) and pure interstate can pull nearly 350 if I push it. I have a 17 gallon tank and have never pushed it too far due to my dancing gas guage.

K&N, '01 wheels, Window Tint, Harley-Davidson badging, red underbody kit, ext.
Window covers, Harley-Davidson mudflaps, custom cat-back exhaust,
head/taillight covers, ventshades side and rear, ram air on the way. Autolite 3923s, 180 T-Stat
