Hello,

My 93 3.9L V6 MFI Dakota wont start! I been having trouble with it for a few months now. As soon as i start it it stalls can't keep it running so i hit the gas very quick & lightly 5or6 times and it runs fine . It does this at random other times it works fine.
Now I didn't drive it for a week went to start it and it won't start!

It turns over fine, battery is good just wont run! OK checked for spark by putting some gas Down the Throttle ports fired right up and ran for a few seconds. Sounds like its not getting gas! Fuel Filter is ok, checked all Relays in the (PDC) with meter there ok, put in new plugs, wires, cap & rotor, checked fuses. NO GO!

How do i test the fuel pump! When you turn the key to the on position you should here it right? I pulled the fuel line off at the inlet side of the fuel filter turned key to on position gas should pump out right?

If you have any other ideas of what it could be please let me know and how hard is it to replace the in-the-tank fuel pump!

THANKS

without actually looking at it, it almost (99.9999876879%) sounds like it's your fuel pump. I was going to say that it could be your injectors or your cam sensor... but you said you poored some gas down it's throat and it started right up... sooooo... it's gotta be the pump. When you turn the key all the way on (but not to "strat") you will hear a whiny noise from the gas tank. (not a clue on how to spell out the noise, so we're just going with whiny). If you don't hear it, or not sure if you heard it... do what you said in you post, with taking off the fuel line. when you do this, put a bucket under the line, and only turn the key on for a second, because that's all you need to see if the pump is spitting anything out. If nothing happens, it's busted. (time to call NAPA)
Hope that helps.

There should be a test port (schrader valve) on the fuel rail, it works like a tire valve stem check and see if you have any fuel there (watch your eyes). If you have pressure there but it won't start you need to see if you have power at the fuel injectors.

good call Jon! Duh... didn't think about that. All of us here who have swapped injectors should no better. Thanks for having my back. Alot less agervating than taking off the fuel line, sticking it in a bucket, turning the key on and off real quick, checking to see if it worked or not, putting the line back on... blah blah blah.

Thanks for the help!

I forgot to mention that i did push on the schrader valve and nothing came out and checked the codes just getting #55.Now I'm 99.9% sure its the fuel pump.

I read its easier to take the bed off to get to the fuel pump but I have to drop the fuel tank since its just me working on it.So when i was under there the tank is held up by two straps, at the top of each strap near the bed is a long 2" bolt with nut take them off bend straps it should be free right? I will use my jack under it for support. Anybody know any tricks that might make things easier?

Ray
