hey all, (WARNING, VERY LONG POST!)

I have a 2000 Sport CC V6 with and auto trans. let me start this off with a tale.

ever since i got my liscence, 3 years ago, i have always wanted to have a manual. Ive never had the privilege to own a manual car in my family so the only times i get to drive one is when my friends let me drive theirs.

So anyways, 2 years ago my folks took me dakota shopping! I pleaded for a manual and used many excuses (saves on gas, a thousand dollars cheaper, ect...) but what do they say? "NOPE" i ask why, their reasoning for not letting me get one was "What if there was an emergency and we need your truck, but we dont know how to drive stick". So i ended up with an Auto, i love my truck dont get me wrong, but i just wish it was a stick.

2 years later (present time), guess how many times my folks drove my truck? THATS RIGHT!!! ZERO!!!! so now on to the real questions .

How can i swap out the auto trans for a manual one? What is required for this to work? Am I able to do this myself (im somewhat knowledgable about my truck, not a mechanic though). If i take it to a shop, do i go to a trans shop or a custom shop? How much (approximate) will this cost total? Is it worth the trouble or should i sell my truck and buy a manual one (id prefer to keep it though cuz there is lots of memories)?

Thanks for all the help

Anyone with a manaul dakota want to trade trans??? eh eh eh?!?!?!? :)

It can be done, i know people who have done it with old cars. You need to get rid of the flexplate and install a flywheel and pilot bearing, possibly weld up some mounts and splice some electrical connections, and you have to cut a hole in the floor for the shifter. If you feel confident pulling trannies and know how to weld then go for it. Otherwise you are better off trading in the truck for a manual, if you have to pay a shop to do it your looking at a few thousand dollars in labor.

Once you get a stick shift truck teach your parents how to drive it, everyone should be able to drive a manual.

I have a 5 sp, i wouldnt switch if i were you. I definitely wouldnt cut yours up to put in a 5 sp either. You can trade with me? 99 sport 5 sp 4x4, got a nice susp. lift and take real good care of it! jk. but i would definitely drive a stick dakota before switching, especially if you are gonna spend as much as it is to swtich yours out.
