I have a 1996,v6,5spd,4x4 and I need to replace the engine and was wondering how hard it is to pull out, also is it easier to pull motor and transmission together or unbolt it from the block.

I have no idea on the specifics of a '96 Dak, so maybe someone can correct me if I'm wrong...but, judging from my past experience with pulling engines on several vehicles, it goes a lot easier if you separate the tranny from the block. I did manage to pull the 2.5L I4 out of an '84 Montero with the tranny and transfer case attached, but I had to put it WAY up in the air on extra tall jackstands in order to get enough angle on it, and used an overhead lift. I wouldn't recommend it.

On your truck it would be easier to pull the engine out by itself. It's not too bad a job, unless you start breaking stuff it should come out in 5 or 6 hours (considering you've never done it before, i can have mine out in under 3). I think the GenII Dakota's are one of the easiest late model vehicles to get the engine out of.
