driving down road engine just dies. on inst pannel
no gauges just lights. i get 4 flashes from odometer then it states NO BUS.it will turn over but will not start. awhile later (5 min to 1 hr) it will start. if i turn key to on and still have no gauges, it won't start. if i turn key and have gauges, it will start. this problem has gone from once a week to twice daily. does anyone have or know where to get error codes. or should i just shoot it like a broken horse. it mostly does it when aproaching a red light. tired of being cussed at. my finger is getting tired.

warlord, don't get frustrated and give up just yet. All Dakotas have an onboard error coding structure that is rather easily utilized. Quote the Haynes Manual:

"The Check Engine light, located at the lower left corner of the instrument cluster, comes on each time the ignition key is turned to the On position. It should stay on for three seconds. This lets you know the Check Engine Light is working properly.

The "Check Engine" light flashes any stored fault code(s) after the ignition switch is cucled twice from On to Off, then to On within five seconds.

The Codes are two digit numbers. The start of test (88) code ( eight flashes, a pause and eight more flashes ) is flashed first. After this cose, any stored fault codes will be flashed in order. After the last code is flashed, the end of code output (55) code ( five flashes, a pause and five more flashes ) is flashed.

Refer to the accompanying fault code chart..."

Blah blah blah and all of the fault codes. Now pay attention because if you thought your middle finger was getting tired, you could imagine how all of my fingers are feeling...

"88 - Start of Test
11 - No Distributor input signal
12 - Memory standby power loss
13 - MAP sensor vacuum curcuit
14 - MAP sensor electricla curcuit
15 - Vehicle speed/distance sensor curcuit
16 - Loss of Battery voltage
17 - Engine running too cold
21 - Oxygen sensor curciot
22 - coolant temperature sensor curcuit
23 - Throttle body temperature sensor curcuit
24 - Throttle position sensor curcuit
25 - Idle Speed Control motor driver circuit
26 - Peak injector current has not been reached
27 - Fuel injector control circuit
31 - Canister purge solenoid circuit
32 - EGR system
33 - A/C Clutch cutout relay circuit
34 - Speed control vacuum or vent control
35 - Idle switch curcuit or radiator fan control
36 - Air switching solenoid circuit
37 - Part throttle unlock solenoid driver circuit
41 - Charging system excess or lack of current
42 - Automatic shutdown relay driver circuit
43 - Ignition coil control circuit
44 - Battery Temperature sensor - high voltage
45 - Governor pressure solenoid circuit
46 - Battery voltage too high
47 - Battery voltage too low
51 - Oxygen sensor stuck at lean position
52 - Oxygen sensor stuck at rich position
53 - Module internal problem
55 - End of code output
62 - Emissions reminder
63 - EEPROM write denied
64 - Catalytic converter efficiency failure
65 - Power steering switch failure
71 - Auxiliary 5 volt supply output low
72 - Catalytic converter efficiency failure
"

Thats the entire list of every fault code (yes, I really just sat here and typed it just so you wouldn't get rid of your dodge) Hopefully it helped. If not, pass that list around becuase I haven't seen it anywhere else. Best of Luck

I have an 1988 V6 Dakota with 258 000kms. Recently, in the cold weather, it has a hard time starting. I takes quite a bit of effort for it to turn over and will start after 5 or more miinutes of constantly trying and turning over. Can someone please explain to me what fault vcode "33", AN OPEN OR SHORTED CONDITION DETECTED IN THE A/C CLUTCH RELAY CIRCUIT, means in laymans terms. Also, how do you know if the fuel filter needs changing? Is this a big job.

Thanks in advance..

my understanding is the 33 error code is standard if you do not have air conditioning

it will turn over n isnt getting fuel the first time i try to start it
the second or third time it starts to get fuel n will then to proceed to run
if i shut it down n try to get it to run the fuel is not getting to the throttle body
and the codes that come up read
"12" memory standby power lost
"45**" governor pressure solenoid curcuit
if anybody knows what those codes mean or has any help it will be appriciated

"12" Memory Standby Power Lost - somone or something disconnected the battery power to the PCM.

"45" Governor Pressure Solenoid Circuit - you can access the governor pressure solenoid by removing the trans oil pan.

i suggest you purchase a Haynes or Chiltons repair manual for about 20 bucks.

could be a bad splice or ground. check the splice in the harness beneath the underhood fusebox. 3 wires to 1. redo that splice. i think it's splice #115 in the wiring diagram which one of those repair manuals may have.

Timmy, you're right you don't have the fuse box under the hood, mine is an 88 as well, I think when they went to multi port fuel injection is when they went to the fuse box under the hood.
Daddio, not trying to be a smart a$$ just clearing things up a bit. Try turning the key on and see if you canhear the fuel pump run for about 1-2 seconds. if you can hear it try turning the key on 2-3 times to see if that will help it start any faster.
Good Luck

Get codes 21, 51 and 52. Vehicle runs fine but after a few days there will be times when it kicks, bucks, backfires and runs really rough. Anyone know of anything. Everything from the map sensor to the fuel filter has been replaced.

21 Oxygen sensor signal doesn't change = bad oxygen

51 Oxygen sensor stuck at lean position
(Change O2 sensor first clear codes see if it still
reappears)

52 Oxygen sensor stuck at rich position
(check breather tube running to cat-con)

51 could also be caused by a bad map sensor. You
said you changed yours so just check all connections
to it. Replace the O2 then check cat breather tube
if so equipped.
