Are there any differences between the older 3.9L v6's as opposed to the newer magnum 3.9L v6? (horsepower, fuel mileage, durablity). How reliable are the 3.9 in the long term? Thanks for any help.

The early models of the Dakota, 1987-1990, do not have the Magnum engines. They are rated at 125 hp versus whatever the 1991+ Magnum engines put out. The mpg's are about the same, I think. Just a weaker engine I suppose. Less mods available on the earlier V6's, too. I know, I've got one!

I have a 93' and the dealer says the specs that they were able to get showed that my 3.9 magnum has 175. I know it'll spank a 190hp S-10, so no complaints! Also, the 3.9s have been good for 300,000 on the original block, head gaskets, and tranny!

If I'm not mistaken I remember seeing cams direct from Mopar Performance for the pre Mag V6, if it were me I would stay with carb, MP does offer a 4bbl intake for the pre Mag and all good old tricks should work like head porting, old style roller rockers and ignitions.
Hope this helped, good luck.

If you cant find those parts I mentioned let me know I'll dig out my old MP books and get you part #'s.

Sup all, it's me 87Dakbuilder, ok here's the deal, the premagnum 3.9 v6er put out 125 hp (unless you bought it in Cali) the magnum 3.9 v6ers put 175 hp. Now there are plenty of mods for both engines. On the premagunm engines you can get cams and valves and such from Mopar performance. On the Magnum engines the same options exist and more. You will have to do a lot of research for a premagum engine, but with a little hard work you can crank out 200+ ponies easily. On one of the cheapest and most influencial mod that you can do to your premagnum engine is to remove the OEM catylic converter. It is advantageous to do this because the old 3.9 v6ers were made with a restrictive honeycomb element in the cat the robs horsepower. Also swap out the factory exhaust for an after market cat, and headers. You'll see quite a difference. Very cheap mods as well. As far as milage is concerned, my 87 has 120K plus on her and she still starts everyday. Routine maintence is all you should have to do if you don't have a heavy foot like me. As for the magnum engines, go to speed tweeks and have a blast ordering parts. There is just about everything under the sun for those engines. The only limitations will be your pocket books or wallets.

Just for info sake on the longevity issue, I owned a 91 Ex Cab 3.9 that turned over 215,000 miles before I sold it, and it was still solid, the truck spent most of it's life doing delivery driving in stop and go traffic here in Phoenix (110 degree plus summers). One of my best friends owned an 89 Dak and ran up 278,000 miles before he sold it, it spent all it's life in west Texas and Phoenix as well, I know that one is still running around, I still see it from time to time. Neither of these engines were rebuilt or overhauled, just good regular oil and filter changes. I got a 97 Dak with the 3.9 for the same reason this time, I know it will last if it's taken care of.

I just recently pulled my 88 dakota sport 4x4 out from its hidey hole. It was my first vehicle and I want to breathe new life into it. It's a 3.9L V6, w/manual tranny. I have spent the last three months trying to locate performance parts. If any of you guys can help me out, I would appreciate it. It runs like a champ w/ only 53000 original miles, and you could eat off any part of it, but it needs to grow up. e-mail me if u want Jcook005@rochester.rr.com Thanks!!

people who love mopar don't read this

175 is a pathetic amount on hp for an engine of this size(let alone 125)
also 230 and 250 are pathetic numbers for 5.2and 5.9 (235 for 4.7 isnt that great either) and 310 from an 8.0 V10??? what the hell is that??
and before you start saying what a jerk I am I challenge you guys to find me one GM or Ford(I hate them too) with less HP from equal or less displacement. and I'm not talking about low torque car engines...I'm talking about truck engines. Every other company has more hp per CI/litre

just some random examples
GM 6.0 V8 345 hp
GM 5.3 V8 285
GM 5.7 V8 300-400
FORD 5.4 (I know its more but I dont know the number off hand)4.6 has 260
GM 4.2 I6 270(I know it can match the mopar V8s torque but still)
the only thing close to dodge is the GM 4.3 V6 but its still more hp and torque
Lexus 3.0 220 hp 222 ft lbs(I know its a lexus)
0-60 in 8.8 seconds with a 3900lb AWD

the 3.9 and 5.9 are old and weak and the 5.7 hemi can't be done soon enough

Actually the Ford 5.0L is 205 hp! Just get that in there, I also own a 85' Mustang GT 5.0L. It does have nice power. But in all respects, he Dodge hater above is right. A 3.9L only making 125 hp is bad. I dont know what dodge has NOT done but they need to rework their engine lines alittle. I saw a show today, about old 60-early 70s mopars. The Dart, etc. One of them had a slant 6 that made like 275 hp stock. Why cant our newer technology and better computerized engines compare with these ancient motors? Please explain.

thank you

I'm not a dodge hater I just think the engines should be putting out more hp(and will be soon)

I love my dak but I hate its small, weak, noisy, rough running and upgaradable(i consider that a bad thing, because if anything short of a super/turbocharger, NOS or something that makes alot of noise adds a lot of hp then it wasnt built well to start with)

wish I got a V8 other then that no complaints about the truck.

Sup JoeE, Thanx for the info on the home brew, I used it and it appears to be working well. My dad is in the process of sending me the mopar performance mag, once I get it I'll put the part # of the cams that they offer for our Gen I daks. I know that we can use1.6 roller rockers on our heads though, and you can port and pollish the heads as well. I'm still looking into putting a tbi unit on our Gen I engines. I don't see it as being a difficult process. I just gotta find someone to sell me the intake, and PCM from a magnum engine. Aside from that I don't anticipate any real problems. Once I actually get an intake, I'm gonna put the v8 tbi on it with the FMS 24 inc injectors. That along with the Cam, Headers, Catback exhuast, autolites, and rollers should put me over 200 ponies. I can't get it dynoed till I get back to the states though. OH yeah I'm having the computer recalibrated too, cuz I want to go faster than 105. Changing the stock gears to 355's or 392's also. Hopefully these mods will give you more power, if not there's always the juice or a s/c.

man you got your work cut out for you! I hope all works out. How much hp do you think it is possible to get outa the old 3.9s? I have always thought about swaping a 318 in but if I can get up over 200 hp with the V6, I think I will stay with it. Wjen you get all the info down for your truck, drop me a line and hook me up with the specs. I am not real sure about the port and polish thing and cams and stuff. I got the outer engine stuff down but that inside stuff has me at a loss. Thanks buddy,

Hello Dakota fans!I have to say I love my Dakota(some say a little too much),we all have to have a hobby.Just in case anyone is interested I figured out a way to make a couple of engine mods and save some money while adding HP.First strip out your old air filter box but don't throw anything away yet because you are going to need some pieces. All you should have on is the piece that recieves the hose from the air filter box. Then go down to your local muffler shop and have them bend a 3'(lenght may vary depending on your truck)piece of 3"exhaust pipe so that it almost lays where the Air filter box used to be.Then but a K&N cone style filter on the end of that. You will need to cut the end of the hose that came from the old air filter box to make the connection from the pipe to the air reciever there should be hose clamps still on the hose just make sure you make the cut to include both hose clamps you will see what I mean.

Yeah I hear you and you are right, this is a cold air intake! .....But.... if you do it this way you can get the whole thing done at right around $50 and add aprox 15 horses.Go online or anywhere else and you get the same results at 4X the cost! You do the math. This mod also added around 50 miles more per tank of fuel,do the math again. One more thing,if you did this right you will need to remove the rubber piece that covers the gap between your radiator and left head light assembly to alow cooler air to enter that side of the motor and get to your new filter. To take this one step further you can grind down the surface of the pipe and paint it for looks or have it powder coated(like I did)and realy blow people away when they see it!More to come guys hang loose and enjoy your rides :)!!Bill.

87dakbuilder, do I understand you correctly, are you planning on putting a Magnum intake, TB and PCM on a preMag 3.9? if so I highly doubt you'll be able to pull that off as the preMag 3.9 has intake mounting holes at about a 45 dgree angle and Mags are straight up.

Here are a list of Mopar part #'s for preMag 3.9's

*V6 ported head, 2.02 valves-P4452747
*Cam 450"/455" 110cntr- P4452814
*4bbl intake- P4452115

I have no idea if any of this is even available anymore but heres a startin point for you guys anyway.

Good luck, Scott

and for anyone who didnt here me before I LOVE MY DAK...IM NOT A DAK HATER just a 3.9 hater
