I know this one is vacuum related, but I'll be dipped if I can figure it out. When driving with the heater fan on and the vents in any position, if you step on the gas the air will go straight to the defroster. Let off the gas and it comes back out the set area like floor, vents, etc. Also, the engine races every now and then to around 1500 in park. Any help is appreciated! Thanks in advance.

Vacuum line going to the brake booster. Look around the drivers side near the steering column for a vacuum line that isn't connected.

Well, everything there is connected. I even tracked the line across the cowl hoping for a break. No such luck. If this is the line, should I start poking my head under the dash somewhere?

4wD is right, its got to be a vacuum leak and a pretty bad one. Look all over and double check what he suggested.

Good luck

I had that problem, the dealer replace a vacuum valve,,, #4677204 "valve-vacuum check" 5.95 for parts, 99.75 for service.

And for this reason I now read all the dodge forums and newsgroups and go to everyones page I find and am writing my own page as we speak.

Thanks everyone!! I really don't mind the duplicate information. This is all new to me since my background is with GM (throw stones now ). I just bought this truck - haven't owned a Dodge since my '69 Dart GT back in .. err, 1986 I think it was. I couldn't pass up a '97 with 38k on it. Okay, I'll be outside Sunday checking the vacuum lines off of the brake booster again. Thanks for that part number too!! I'll let everyone know how I make out.

I scoured the truck looking for any broken or disconnected lines but found none. I'll be heading to the boneyard this weekend to check out a few Dakotas for reference purposes. I must be overlooking something.

On a side note, I installed cruise control in the truck Sunday. The servo ties into the vacuum line that runs across the cowl from the brake booster. After 2 short trips, I have not seen the idle racing like it did before. (Forgot to check the vent problem!) Actually it started to stumble and then it stalled once, so I would guess that the vacuum has been altered.
