Subject: Whats wrong with this picture?

Message:
Ok what is wrong with this picture? Went to the drag strip and here are the results with the following upgrades and not hitting the nitrous button till 2nd gear (approx 330 ft)
JBA Headers, RS Racing Intake, OBX exhaust, MSD ignition, 75 shot nitrous express

rt 1.009 (ouch)
60 ft 2.800
330 7.239
1/8 11.091
MPH 66.79
1/4 17.008
MPH 82.34
Is that not the fastest mph 17 sec run youve ever seen??
Any suggestions on how to drop this to 14.6-15 like it should be?? there were cars running 77 mph and hitting 15's. I mean i know mph isnt all the indication but still whats wrong??
Thanks,
JOsh

AOL keyword, cars! as far as a v6 running a 15 probably not gonna happen with the mods you have. i ran a 17 in a stock dak, you're reaction time could also be a part of the problem. how are you running it? the shifting, staging, etc!

Ummm, did you notice i said 75 shot of nitrous along with all those other mods and its a reg cab with 3.92's. So it def isnt stock! Reaction time makes no difference in overall ET anyway since your time doesnt start till after you break the reaction time sensors! PLease someone else respond that know what they are taling about! Intense said i should run a 14 second range with those mods!

Two things.....

1. Cars that were running 15's and hitting only 77 mph were letting off at the end of the track. That's bracket racing for you. Any run in the 15's with the pedal nailed at the top end should be in the mid 80's as for mph.

2. I used to run my modded V-6 1992 Dakota at 16.0's at 83 mph, and it had a 3.20 rear end. So you should be at least that quick judging from your mph. Is it a manual trans?

I don't really know where your .8 sec is falling off..... Were the clocks working properly that night? The clocks at our track have screwed up before and people were running all kinds of whacky times......

well.... looks like your not doing a couple things right....

With a 75 shot i hit a best of a 9.5 (1/8).... but with custom rear suspension (open diff) and slicks. You should be able to tap off low 11 seconds without the juice (unless my truck is just an un-goddly fast v6).

what to do:

Is it a auto or stick?

*if auto... preload the converter untill tires spin

*stick.... rev up to about 2000 but dont overdo it

*Hit the nitrous off of the line... when i first used my nitrous i was getting a 10.01 (didnt hit the juice till 2500rpms)... then with a little practice and hitting it from the get go i got a 9.5.

*buy some sticky (VHT) stuff for your tires

when i last started using my 100 shot i was hitting it at about 2000 rpms (not off of the line) and was just getting really bad tire spin (half of the track) but still got a 8.95 as a best.... but remember my truck weighs a lot less and is built up a lot.

with practice you should be able to get into the 15 second range (and when weather gets cooler)

good luck!

Yeah, even with the open rear end spinning the piss out of one tire, I was getting 2.4 short times. I was basically revving it to 2000 and trying to soft-shoe the clutch for the launch and then I was shifting at 5000-5200 rpm.

This was with a Mopar Performance computer, a V-8 TB, roller-tipped rockers, stiffer pushrods, no clutch fan, a K&N filter, and a full 3" exhaust all the way back.

Take that short time of 2.8 down to a 2.4, and you'll get your .8 back in the 1/4 mile....... For every tenth off your 6o' time, you'll get two tenths in the 1/4......

You sure you're not just spinning out of the hole? Bring your rear air pressure down to about 28 psi, and be sure to power brake if its an auto tranny. Don't do a big smoky burnout. That just kills traction on a street radial. Just spin them over to clean off the treads and stage it.

Thanks guys for the input, I think i should be able to get that 60 ft time to 2.2 bc the r/t i raced against hit 2.21 and I should have about the same hp as him, heres his times compare these to mine and you can see why i was so confused (look at the MPH)
rt .619
60ft 2.210
330ft 6.297
1/8 9.719
MPH 71.79
1000 12.655
1/4 15.173
MPH 85.77 (only 3 mph faster than me, and i know he didnt let off, he and i were talking before and after the race, he said that run felt slow, only mods to his truck were FIPK and flowmaster. The track temp was a pretty steamy though 87 deg.

Listen, I will listen to intense and anyone else that comments as long as they dont have an attitude like you did in the first post. Ive raced alot of things from boats to motorcycles, never my truck and never anything on nitrous, so yes a few hints would be nice and intense and alwx have been more than helpful. I was wondering what was wrong with my truck and i wasnt looking for a comment along the lines of "my stock truck ran that" bc you know what i realize that stock v6's run that, obviously i wouldnt think something was wrong if i thought a 17 sec quarter was good with the 100hp in mods ive done.
Thanks, but no thanks,
Intense keep the tips coming!! Friday night Im givin it onee more shot!

thats pretty true. each time i raced i knocked at least 1/10th off my time.

Josh,
get the throttle body... it will help you off the line. You shouldnt expect 2.2 60ft times with your six unless your ready to get serious. Your friend was tapping them off in his rt but his rt has the same gears as you but 345 ft lbs of torque. The only reason i could hit those times was because i have ladderbars, coilover set up with 150# springs, drag shocks, and 27/11.50/15 slicks.

Just try that nitrous off the line and see how you do.

remember..... practice makes intensedak3.9

i dont think you'll be ready with coilovers. My rear suspension took me over a month to build. All of it is custom built.... i had to build a mounting place for the top of the coilovers... the bottom just mount to the axle tube... all being welded of course. The kit is universal. I had removed my leaf springs... take a look at my thumb

DakJR, you already know this from your past racing, but you can't just lay down the number on your first run. Practice makes perfect all the damn time. I sold my 16.0-sec 1992 V-6 truck and bought a 4.7L 2000 Sport. The first 5 runs I went a 16.38. Boy was i pissed.

I took the air filter out and went 15.98. Okay, now we're talking..... So for the rest of the 2000 season, i just tried different launch techniques, different shift points, etc until i was running 15.4's consistently. Then i started adding mods here & there. Now i'm running 14.9's and it's still getting quicker. Hope to be in the 14.6's range before September's Mopar Meet at Atlanta Dragway. It's all learning to drive. Not just learning to drive, but learning to REALLY drive.

Im also not getting that big of a hit withthe nitrous, something still isnt right, the 75 shot should break the tires loose at 15-20mph right? well im not getting that, and even if it wont break the tires loose im not getting that sledgehammer hit. I know that a purge kit would help, but from how intense has described his nitrous hits in past posts i think im missing something! Any ideas?

Josh

Have you got the correct fuel pill installed for a 75 shot? If you are running the wrong fuel set-up then it is going way rich and overcompensating for the nitrous. That would take the edge off the "hit" and pretty much slow your truck down, too.

Im running the 41/33 nitrous fuel, it was running rich a bit on the air fuel im going to try the 100 shot and see what that shows up as onthe air/fuel bc it looks to be a more lean mixture nit/fuel, if that hits hard then i know to lean it out a bit (obviously it will hit harder bc of the 25 hp jump but you get what i mean)

Just be sure not to go too lean. But that may be your problem is going toooo rich. I know a guy here in ATL that has a 318 5-spd 1999 RC Dakota that's running a so-called 150 shot. Well, I've seen a 150 shot on a Dakota and he's lucky if his set-up is giving him a 25-shot. He runs 14.50's on a 318 with a 150 shot. Something is waaay wrong there. My suspicion is the nitrous/fuel ratio, but I don't know the specific numbers. You should call the NX folks and see if they have a tech dept that can help you out with the right ratios...... just keep a close eye on the A/F meter!

Intense: what rpm do you rev to at the line?
I was holding it at liek 1400 last week. Should i get it up higher??

I'm thinkin that sounds pretty promising..... the fuel pill must've been a little too fat which fouled your plugs. Sounds like going with a little more nitrous-to-fuel was the answer. Keep us posted.

They werent too bad, the dam sotck manifold bolts break really easy though (broke two, but eventually got em out) I woud reccomend soaking the bolts in wd40 overnight then doing the install ( i forgot to do that part) lol. Its a little tight back there so get ready for a little frustration but it also helps to tighten the back two bolts on the underside of the headers from underneath the truck. Once you get the stock manifolds off, really take your time and get all of the old gasket off the heads and really polish it up nice before putting the new gaskets on. Also start up the truck after you are done and let it heat up (youll hear slight leaks in the headers). Then let it cool and tighten down the botls again. Check the headers and do that for about the first two or three days you drive it and youll find that the headers wont leak anymore (itll sound like a pack of cards being shuffled if the headers arent sealing). Other than that it took about 2 hours (beer breaks included, its not a true install without the brew) everything else went smooth! Big increas was noticed!
Hope that helps,
Josh
