Have you pulled the #6 plug and checked it's condition? The electrodes should be a light grey color. If they are glazed or white, your overheating or running lean. If they are dark and oily, it's fouling out and could just be a defective plug. If it looks dirty, you can wire-brush the plug gently to clean it. :0)

As for the tranny? I've noticed that on ocassion. Usually on a start after it's sat overnight. Just stick it in neutral, let the clutch out, then try again. Only thing I can think is that on a cold-start the tranny doesn't sync-up right when you press the clutch in. (IE: Since you have to press the clutch to start the engine, nothing in the tranny is spinning. The syncro's don't function, and the gears don't 'mesh' properly when you try to put it into gear).

ok thanks i'll check out the plug tom.. as for the tranny just does it sometimes and even sometimes after it's warm and you just shut it off for a few minutes and start it back up. sometimes though when it does it i can get it in first to take off build the rpm up to about 5 and it will start working perfect..like it's something with the engine's speed

Hmm... thats odd. Mine doesn't do that. Have you had the 18,000 mile 5-speed servicing done yet?

That could be it! Wire brush that plug, get some good gas and pour some fuel injector cleaner in there. :0)

ok here's what i did installed a new plug (just on the safe side) still didn't fix the problem soo i put in a new cap and rotor and still no luck. i'm thinking it might be out of timing a little..that's the only other thing i can think of you think it would be worth since it's acting up to go ahead and put in a new timing chain and gears? and idea on how long that job would take doing it alone?also planning on installing a new throttle body while i have the truck down for repairs

Well, I suppose it could be the Timing Chain... or it could be something else. If it was me, I'd bite the bullet and get the entire system checked out by a dealer or mechanic. Tell them everything that has been going on, and pay the checkup fee. Or, you can continue to chase an unidentified problem into the realm of not-so-cheap-and-easy repairs.

I had bought a used 1998 Dakota RC 3.9L 4x4 about 6 months ago from a dealer. The Check Engine Light came on last week so I took it to Autozone to get it scanned. It came up as a misfire on Cyl # 5 so I figured it was best to start with a tune-up. I bought the spark plugs (autolite AP5224) at Walmart and the cap, rotor, and wire set at carquest(formerly NAPA). I changed the plugs but when I went to take the distributor cap off, I noticed that the cap was not tightly secured on the distributor and that I could not get one of the distributor cap bolts off because it was cross-threaded into the distributor housing. I ended up breaking the bolt head off with a socket that I jammed onto the bolt head because there was no clearance between the bolt and the distributor cap. I then turned the engine to TDC and align the rotor to #1 cyl and marked the relation to the cam position sensor plate and removed the distributor. I used The good bolt from the other side of the old cap to find the thread size. It was a 10-32 thread size so I drilled it out using the old distributor cap as a drill guide and then tapped the new drill hole. There was some rust inside the distributor and on the shaft just under where the rotor sits. I cleaned it up with some steel wool and WD40 and put it back in. The truck is running great with no more codes and it runs much smoother.
