I don't know where else to turn to, so I will ask you guys. I was driving my truck around and I accelerated from a stop sign a little quick and I heard it backfire or pop or something. It then shut off. I can't get it to start again. It is sitting in a parking lot right now. What could be the problem? Could it have backfired through the throttle body and screwed it up?

Thanks.

check your sparkplugs first. I had put new spark plugs in one time... had that same thing.... backfire and it shut off... one of them just fouled and i replaced it. Check your ignition wires and such.

This would be awesome if this was all it was!! Were you able to start it back up afterwards? Mine will not even start up. It should still start up with one fouled up spark plug, right?

Thanks.

I hate to be the barer of bad news but it sounds like you may have jumped timing.

Good side: you replace the timing gears and chain and your ridin again.

Bad side: the valves got way outa sync when this happened and you now have some bent stuff.

I soooooo hope this isnt what happened but I have been there.

My prayers are with you buddie. Scott

I have been hearing a noise coming from the front of the engine for a while. Can't really describe it. My dad thought it was a screwed up water pump, but I don't know. It has been going on for atleast a year. My dad said don't worry about it. When it breaks, you can fix it.

May have to get rid of this Dakota. How much would all that cost with labor? I won't be able to do it myself.

Yeah that noise was probably the timing chain slapping around. I don't think it's an interference engine so you probably didn't do any internal damage unless you were revving it really high when it let go. I don't know the prices, if the rest of the truck is in good shape it would be worth it to fix.

Yeah, it does sound like the timing chain jumped and the timing slipped. Like Jon said, you should be ok once it's put back together. I really recommend getting a higher-performance chain (Better chain and gears), full roller. The actual chain and gears should cost less than $75 after tax, but the labor is going to be expensive. They have to pull the water pump and the cover off the front... probally the harmonic balance too (not sure there), it's not exactly a quick fix.

Not to belittle anyone, but this is what happens when your engine starts making funny noises and you take the "I don't know what it is, but when it breaks I'll fix it" approach. If the engine was interference, you'd be dealing with broken valves, damage to the pistons, bent pushrods, possibly damaged rockers, possibly ruined lifters, and maybe a damaged cam depending on the RPM. When your engine or drivetrain makes odd noises, don't ignore it...

Try calling around and asking how much to replace the timing chain... your going to want an oil change too, in case the chain disintigrated... I'd have to think you can get it done for under $500 total... or around that depending on where you live.

I don't know... I -do- know that some of the older Buick 3.8Ls had plastic timing gears that went bad quickly. The 3800 has metal ones, same engine besides that...

As for the Dak? I thought they were all metal. Dodge Magnum Timing chains are a notorious point of failure. Mine doesn't make any noise, but I'm keeping an eye on it.

Interference engine or not I HAVE bent valves and pushrods in a stock 1970 318 when it jumped timing, so dont go spouting off your wisdom unless you've been there.

Do yourself a favor and do the checks I stated so you know what your up aginst.

Sorry for being so touchy but when I give advice its from experence and not from "I dont know if the harmonic ballancer has to come off or not" type of knowledge.

Excuse me FazDak for trying to be helpful. I'm supposing the Balancer needs to come off, I know it has on the other engines I've worked on. But then, none have been Dodge V6s so I'm not going to say for sure. I do recall that the engine is non-intereference. so unless he dropped a valve or something came up higher than it should, there should have been no further damage to the engine. Thats typically what 'non-interference' means. That the valves and the pistons don't interfer with each other. IE: When the valves are full down, and the pistons full up, they don't touch (unless you have a higher lift cam or rockers, in which case it's not non-interference is it? I'm willing to bet he doesn't).

Yes, it's possible he has other damage. He won't know for sure until he gets it apart. But my comment about 'not ignoring engine noises' stands pat as good advice and I do -not- appreciate your blasting me in such a manner.

I've bent valves and pushrods. Hell, through my own stupidity I did it the first time. I'll admit that.

Sorry dude I had a rough day.
But seriously I try and play devils advocate to all who arent mechanics that way they know how to test and repair properly not on a guess.

Your "non interference" theroy is semi tru but you have to relize that hydralics play a part, being the lifters. Have you ever clearenced an engine? if so you would relize the a fully pumped up lifter can cause valve to piston contact thought the lifters were never meant to be pumped up at TDC it can and does happen in timing jump situations some time.

Yes, I realize that. But if he was idling at the intersection chances are his oil pressure was low and the lifters weren't at full pressure. From what he said it sounded to me like he hit the gas, the torque hit the chain, and the chain said 'EGAD! No way!'.

I'm sorry about my tone as well, I was pretty stressed myself.

Maybe we should get him to buy us some plane tickets, we'll fly out and fix his truck and I'll buy ya a beer? :0)

Dont make me think all that much but it does get me dreaming, I just cant replace a perfectly good running engine without a good excuse.

Just curious, out of 4 possibilities why wonder about your left front tire only? had you treated it badly the night before? is it the one that always gets pissed on because it close? lol

Amen on the "run out of M/L" !!!! my God thats a freegin tragedy that must be avoided at all cost!!
LOL.
