I want to hook up my 96' Dakota 3.9L 5-spd. She only has 47k. Some old guy had it and it sat in his garage forever. What are the bet things I could do to make it fast. I know I can get it supercharged, K&N air filter, Air Intake, turbo'd, computer chip, performance ignition, and nos. Could somebody tell me what's the best and what's a waste of money.

Start with a massive tune up. Then look into V8 throttle body, cold air intake, and a muffler. Get it moving air first :)

Just like it sounds. Go to a salvage yard and gank one off a 318. I am not sure the exact years your truck can use. Somewhere in 94-96 they changed TB designs. What your basically doing is putting a oversized TB on it. Like on my 97, It came with a dual 44mm TB, I went to a V8 that is dual 48mm=14% more air. Rem, your engine is an air pump, more air in, more air out=more power. I personally dislike elec fans, yes they alow the engine to rev faster, but I live in the south and it started overheating. Thats my opinon.

Yeah that seems to be a good equation. Yeah I think when I go away I m going to put my truck in the shop and get my brakes fixed and then add a K&N air filter and air intake. Maybe if ever get enough money I can get it turbo'd or supercharged. But for now running air through her sounds like a good idea and not that expensive.

Hey Matt - I have the same truck it sounds like u have. Im also trying to give it an extra kick. Becareful tho, someone told me that if u dont have a certain amount of back pressure, it can rob u of power. I dont know that first hand, and dont know the required back pressure either. Wish I did. Anyway, Ive had mine since new, and its starting to show signs of being weak. I havent made any mods to the engine, and I have a few more miles on too - 110K vs 47k. Ive been told the V6 engines are kinda weak anyways because of the extra weight of the cast iron block and heads (but are a lot stronger and more reliable in my opinion) compared to the ford and chevy alum engines. I think ill try that exhaust that u have on there if u dont report any problems with performance, and definately look into a larger TB and intake manifold. Also that can air cleaner prolly can be replaced with an open element cleaner, im not sure, but gonna try it. Im looking for new injectors right now and got a reasonable quote for a performance engine rebuild, that might be something in a few more thousand miles. Hope all goes well with ya and ill check back in later.

If ya got anymore tips share of anything you have done. And yes my exhuast gave me bout 2-5 more hp but way better gas mileage. Get back to me!!

Yes, how you loose that back pressure is gutting/removing the cat. In certin areas it helps, in others its a lose. I think 96, you should beable to go with one off a 96-2000 (do a search on here i think 95 was the swap). The K&N will help, but if you go to a Cold air intake system with a 3" cone filter, you will get even more.

Ok I got ya!! I am going to check into the TB at our local auto salvage we have two. Yeah I am going to get the K&N wit the air intake. 3" sounds good. Looks like everything on my truck is 3" lol. Nah I would never trade my truck in for a V8 b/c I bought my truck or a $5000 steal. If I sold my truck now I would be able to get $8000 for her but she only has 47k on her so she is worth keepin.

Why the hell would u want to trade it for an 8? lol. I test drove a RC 01 V8....BUT... it was a 4x4 full time. I thought it was kinda slow. it had a 4.7 in it I THINK...dont remember it was a while ago. I still didnt trade my 96 RC 2wd in for it, cos I didnt want the payment book or higher insurance. Not worth it when I have a completely reliable Dakota thats PAID for. Im the first and only owner and rather proud of that fact cos I havent been able to keep a vehicle for more than a year before this. Mine is now 6 years old and running strong. Hey Matt! hold up on that K&N FIPK unless u are in it for the looks. I just bought a Holley filter and ill let u know in a few days how my engine is taking it. Gotta see if it will reject the organ transplant! I couldnt see spending $290? on a K&N kit when I spent $30 on a Holley. All chome, looks nice, now im inspired to chrome and detail the rest of the engine, HAHA. I see what ure saying Dale, in the above post. Keep in touch ok? I have an appointment in the next day or 2 to have a new cat-back put on. Im going with Ravin just to see how it performs. Ill let ya know!

From what I have heard, the chip smooths the idle out. And you have to run 93+ gas. I would say do all the other mods, then that one. Save it for last so you can run cheap gas in the mean time.

Hey pete, sorry to hear about ure loss! I hope u can get another one if u still want one!

Matt, ure truck is Ext cab, I'm not sure.....but I think the added weight makes a little difference in performance, but I think thats 4x4s, ext cab and 3.9s. We should be even tho as far as performance. I have an extra 150lbs with a fiberglass cap.
Are u sure ures in a 96? not a 95? I noticed the Dakota badge on the fender and it looks 95ish. I know they change something every year, even if its the smallest details. Either way, U have a killer truck there! Welcome to the world of Dakotas! Also, I see u have a modified exhaust already, take a look under there and tell me if u have true duals, or split pipes from the muffler. That is where im headed with my exhaust if I can ever get it into the shop. I dont know anything about chips, and have read very little on them, but at this point im not concerned. Id rather do all the physical mods first. And I know ure out there every day washing, waxing and detailing arent u!!

Hey Dan yeah my truck is Club Cab but the extra weight isn't much. My truck is a 96' I'm positive I just had my truck painted and he striped all the old paint off took out the dings and then painted her with all the coatings ya need like a new car has. Then it was red decals but I wanted silver b/c I hate black and red looks like a checker board so they couldn't find the silver decals for the 96' year so we went 95'. They back DODGE is from a 97 dodge dakota. It is nice I'll give ya a pic of that sometime. My MagnaFlow exhaust are split duals they come off my orginal cati. It sounds super nice though just like a 5.0 stang I swear.

Bad Dak,
If you are looking for performance upgrades, I suggest you start by looking at www.speedtweaks.net for answers to most of your questions. It sounds like you got a pretty good idea on what you want from the truck, and I'm guessing you're ok with tools in your hands. If thats the case, start by re-locating the IAT sensor, putting an "S" bolt on the throttle body, modifying and adjusting the TPS, home made intake. Speedtweaks has all the information on how to do these and much more. Go to their site and click on the tips and tricks links, you won't be disappointed.

Hmmmm, thats an odd looking truck wouldnt u say Matt???!!!! lmao. I think the gov is part of the computer program itself, and not an actual part u can just disconnect. I wouldnt know about the 100mph thing, since I havent taken my truck up that far (been babying it too much I reckon) Theres nothing wrong with 3100rpm that I can see, the red line is closer to 45-4600 isnt is? I dont remember, havent seen my truck in a week HAHA! Unfortunately for u, I dont think makin obvious mods will make ure insurance go down, just the opposite. Dont let ure agent know about em is all I can say, specially tampering with the gov.

Hey it wouldn't hurt to put a V8 TB. It will help ya. As a good friend told me it gives the engine more air and the more air the better ya can breath and then you can push out more horsepower. So go for it I haven't gotten one yet due to lack of funds put go for it dude.

1207, you probably should get one if you have 3" exhaust. I think sixers shouldn't go above 2 1/2" if I remember correctly. Anyhow - I lost a bit of low end once I had headers installed, and upgrading the TB improved response a lot. A great mod for the money for sure.

97 3.9 CC Sport. Black. Auto 3.55, Quick D Intake, JBA Stainless headers, Autolite 3923s, stainless Borla Turbo XL & tip, V8 TB, FMS 19 lb fuel injectors, 17x10 Boyd Smoothies, JBA 9mm cables, Lakewood chrome traction bars. Have, but not installed: 3.92s, Infinity Sound System

Yeah a TB will help I am sure but I have no idea bout autolites. I've never looked into ttem so I can't help ya there but maybe I'll look it up. It seems like the newer DAK's can't hold the GenII. Red lining at 117 MPH. I am only hitting 3100 at 100. 17 more MPH I'd say would be at ugh maybe 4100 if that. But the GOV is in the way.....
