Cavalier RS?

I had a '96 Cavalier 2-door and an 86' 2-door before that. The '86, with it's 4-speed Stick and all it's 87 horses was -faster- than the '96 Auto with the 117 horses.

Cavaliers are slow. The only ones that were any good were the older ones that they cramed 3.2L V6s into. The RS is an early 90's older-style 2.0L 4-banger.

No, they aren't fast.

just saw your post and thought I could provide a good response: My brother owns a 2002 2.2 Cav no mods, and I just bought a 99 Dak 3.9 no mods other than tires we raced last week He took me off the line(not even 1/4 car length)but I easily caught up to him and smoked it(A/c off in both carsRaced up to 100 kilometers per hour so it shouldnt be a problem. As for the R/S I have one (2.2)and the new cav can beat it(many races home from work)As for the 2.4 cav Idon't know but i don't think a stock Dak could take it,Although I just did a KandN filter removed the intake pipe from the air box took out the rubber air dam and put in Platinum +4's so I'm looking for a Z24 now!!! hope this helps!

Stiinc,
Sorry man, but i think you'll need more than an intake and sparkplugs to beat a Z24. I'm not saying any cavilier is fast or slow, but my 2001 Extened Cab Sport 2Wheel Drive with 3.9 ran a horible 17.5 in the 1/4 mile bone stock while my friends '00 Z24 5speed ran a 15.7 with just intake and a $90 muffler. I don't ever plan on running mid 15's, unless i get the turbo kit when it comes out, but that's just a reason to upgrade, to make 4bangers a little less impressive to our dak's.

I used to have a cavalier. I should have done myself a favor and set that pos on fire! Personally i think they suck all around. No offense to anyone who has one. Just my opinion and you know what they say about opinions. They're like a$$holes, everyone has one.

My '86 Cav was a nice little car, lotsa fun to drive. It was faster than my friend's '87 Mustang LX, which surprised both of us...

The '96 wasn't nearly as comfertable, couldn't corner as good, and was burning a Quart of Oil by 60,000 miles. At 36,000 miles the computer died. At 37,000 miles both front wheel bearings went out and the CV joint on the passenger side went bad. At 39,000 miles the valve cover O-ring died an oil-spewing death. At 40,000 miles the driver's side front rotor was replaced. At 41,000 miles the parking brake... broke. At 43,000 miles I had to get the fuel pump replaced. At 50,000 miles the power steering pump -detonated- (That was messy). I hated that car... had a K@N on it, splitfires, and a few other small things.

The 2.2 was -not- fast. I don't know about the new 2.4 (isn't it OHC?), but unless they have changed the handling, seats, control placement, and reliability issues I wouldn't touch one with a sixty foot pole. My Dakota is -a lot- more reliable than that Chevy POS was!

Millhouse,
My buddy's '00 z-24 ran a 15.7 with intake, exhaust and a medioker sound system in the trunk.
Last time I checked, a 5.0 runs about a 14.7 stock,so either someone's pourin something in the tanks of the 'stangs out there or your rice racer is full of BS.

I have a 98 3.9 man.5 speed Dakota and my friend has a 01 2.2 Cavalier. His is stock and mine only has a flowmaster exhaust kit. He wants to race and put money on it, but I have no idea what his car can do. A lot of people say that I can't beat his car with my truck. What do you guys think I should do???

race him for about $10. now this is important: when you do race him you should know if you could beat him by the time you reach 60. if you can beat him then slow up for him to be about even but enough that he knows you won. after the race is over and he pays up (if you win, if you don't it's just $10). then say, "you almost had me on top end, put an intake on and you'll get me next time." you substitute intake for "different spark plugs" if he's kinda ricey and dumb. then next time you race him, if he ain't queer about it and don't want to race, put about $100 on it or more. and just to make sure he doesn't put it on the bottle or something, both of you inspect each others vehicle (it would seem right if you're betting big money). after all is good to go--race him, smoke him, rob him. and BTW, i'm being serious about most of this cause i tried it once and got about $60 in one day (although the guy had a lazy eye and i don't know if he knew how to race well), but it's still fun if you lose as long you can beat the crap outa him for talkin crap afterwards and didn't bet big money. oh, and make sure you're a good driver cause it won't work unless you are. Good Luck.

Thanks for the money tips! But does anyone know for sure if I can beat him b/c the thing is, I want to know if I should race him stock and have big bragging rights on how a stock 3.9 Dakota beat a 2.2 Cavalier or should I wait and put a few mods on and then race? If so what are some really cheap mods b/c i'm a student on a tight budget.

well, first off, noone is going to be able to tell you for certain that you can beat him because this is the internet, but i personally think you should take him. first you have a five speed, so that gives you one advantage except you better be able to shift good. does he have an auto? i'm not familiar with cavies, except that they suck. anyway, the factor is what kind of cab do you have and are you 4x4? if your a RC 4x2 then i could say pretty confidently that you can take him cause i took one in my 03 RC 3.9 auto 4x2. not sure what engine it was but i'm assuming it was the same one you're asking about. now for the mods: if you want a little more power for less money then i would recommend a homebrew intake--PVC(maybe CPVC if you can find it)pipe with one or two elbows and a fernco connector and K&N cone filter. or you could also just put a drop in K&N and remove the rubber flap in your grille and then run a tube and secure to that area and you would have cold air and kind of a "poor man's ram air" type thing going on. you say you have exhaust, so now i would put in one range colder spark plugs like Autolite 3923's and then replace your thermo with a 180* one. then adjust your TPS and throttle cable. next you can move your IAT sensor to the intake tubing. after you do these then you can move up to the big ones and start spending some real money. if you want some really good info on how to do this stuff then just search these forums with the search feature and i guarantee you you'll probably get the answer you want. and good luck with the cavie.
