Quite an interesting post. Let me add a little fuel to the fire. I have what I guess some would consider extensive FI experience. So let me shed some light. First off the junkyard turbo swap IS the craze nowadays. Seems everybody, whether domestic or import, no matter the make seems to be taking this approach. The abundance of turbos from the cars of the 80's makes finding some easy. Now "some" doesnt cut the bill though. In order for a turbo to spool properly it has to be matched with a cylinder bank that flows enough volume to effectively spool it while still building pressure on the positive side. So choose the right turbo. For a 3.9 liter dodge I would look for maybe two garrets out of a Tbird. The expensive part of such a project isnt going to be the turbos. It will however be the wastegate, BOV, custom pressure pipes, injectors (yes something over 35# is about right),and exhaust. Not to mention the ecu reprogam. I would say when all is said and done maybe 2000 dollars if you REALLY know what you're doing and have a detailed blueprint in front of you. Oh yeah did I forget to mention tapping oil pickups for the turbo?
Now a supercharger. Yes its a simpler "bolt-on" then a Turbo however the linear building of pressure does in fact change with rpm. Ok so get a different pulley, just make sure boost doesnt exceed some horrendous figure on the far side of the rpm range. There's also parasitic loss. Meaning a SC's power depends upon mechanical drive so its efficiency isnt going to be up there with a Turbos'.
Pick your evil. Turbo will be cheaper but require you to know your stuff and you would have to have a lot of custom fabrication done. SC simply isnt as efficient, but its not bad. Even if it IS a tad more expensive. Dont be scared of the TT thing if you have the patience, and resources to make it happen. It'll make for a bitchin ride. Good luck
