I have a 98 Dakota 4x4 SLT. I bought it about 2 months ago, used. My wife drove it the other day to work, and didn't turn the lights off when she got out. 6 hours in hot Louisiana sun = dead battery! Wife got a jump start, but the truck wouldn't stay running unless she held the gas. She gave up. I went and jumped the truck, and still had the same problem. Checked battery and alternator, both good. Started it again, I revved it and held it at about 1000 rpms for a few min. Let off the gas and it idled fine. Took it for a spin, everything good. My question is would because of the battery being dead, would that cause the computer to reset and give me the trouble getting it going like it did? ( sorry for the long post!)

If the battery was -real- dead, it's possible that the drain it was placing on the charging system and alternator was too much when at idle. It just sucked all the power up and left none for the engine itself.

The computer reset once the battery went dead, well, maybe not right away but sometime over the 6 hours the computer lost it's memory. To reset the computer all you have to do is disconnect the battery for a few minutes.

I have had a that happen twice.

First time, Got the Click click sound like the battery was dead. Scratched my head turned it over agian and it fired right up. Left me wondering.

Second time, Same thing but this time it would not restart. Had a work buddy come look he sat in and tried. Motor turned but would not light. As we continued to try it finally started but died like it was fuel starved. Got it going again with the gas pedal down and managed to get it started and running but it would not idle you had to keep allot of gas on it then after a few revs it kicked in and was fine. I have not had this problem again. But now that I think of it both times it was real hot here, high 90 to 100, did not think of heat being the problem.
We think it was a clog in the fuel filter that we managed to get to pass but what about the battery not turning the engine over and giving a dead battery symptom?
Must be another sensor!

Checked it. Also cleaned it! I thought the same since the winch use may have run it down. All checks 4.0.

I am just waiting for it to happen again and see if I can get a error code now that I got the manuals on the way.

I have a 98 dakota sport 4x4, I'm having the same problem. It starts, idles fine, put it in gear, it wants to quite once you start to move. Had the battery checked it was fine, had the alterator checked it was fine, plugs fine, wires fine, terminals cleaned. I still do not know what the problem is. Any suggestions?

try cleaning the iac valve (idle air control). it is on the back side of the throttle body.

Thanks Dave, I will have it looked at, these v8's can be a pain at times, I have already had the upper and lower ball joints replaced and they are loose again. Thanks again for the information.
