Follow your upper radiator hose to your engine. its under well inline with the hose I just put a 180 t-stat in mine yesterday, it was kind of a pain to work in there but its managable.

Its basically behind the alternator. The first time I swapped mine I pulled the alt out. Now I just use a long extension, and some long nose needle pliers. You will have to shake and wiggle the hose/housing to get it in n out, but you can. hope this helps.

Had my '97 V6 SLT overheat on the way into
work yesterday. Kinda figure it's a stuck
thermostat. Haven't had any other probs
before. Is 180 t-stat standard replacement?

Downtown... standard replacement is a 195 t-stat. a 180 t-stat is recommened due to 180 degrees being optimal operating temperature. Good ol' dodge... still to this day.. some cold natured bastards. :-)

'98 3.9 RC... A few mods... ;-)

I just installed a 180 t stat yesterday with my grandpa and today while i was looking my engine over i have noticed a leak. :( But two things make this worse. The left bolt that holds the gasket down is possible crossthreaded and second i am supposed to be leaving this saturday to drive to Colorado from Georgia.

What should i do?

a. leave it and hope for the best.
b. Get another gasket and try again.
c. Cry a little, breakdown, and have goodyear try and fix it.

First check to see if the bolt is x-threded. If it is, i dunno. As far as gasket, take it and throw it as far as you can, and replace with that blue hi heat rtv gasket sealer.

You've come to the king of bastardized and mutilated appliances. If it's cross-threaded, Loctite by Fel Pro (Federal Mogul) makes a thread repair available at most auto stores. Just follow directions. You can try a different bolt (same size but longer)with washers so that it has a shorter throw to tighten dipped in hi-temp silicone (also made by Loctite 700 degrees) to remain pliable. The Fel Pro gasket at Autozone
(not listed for the Dakota) is #35064. Use silicone sealant as well as the gasket on both sides around the bolt holes as well, but be careful you use a thin smear to avoid the sealant
on the stat. It also helps to hold the bolts in the flange as you tilt it into place for tightening. A tap on an extension can help clean the threads for proper realignment of a replacement of the original size bolt. A magnet on a stick will keep the area clean. I don't know if there is a device which would allow a smaller bolt to be used with some sort of expansion material which would remain tight. Take your time!

Hold on a second. Are you only supposed to use either the RTV silicon or a cardboard looking gasket? THE GUY AT AUTO ZONE IS A RETARD. He said that i need both a cheap gasket and the RTV silicone...Wait now that i looked over the packaging for the RTV silicone it says "Gasket Maker" on it. Damn i feel stupid. I used both. So i guess i will find out tomorrow if the bolt was x-threaded or not and try to fix it.

Remove the bolt and ck the threads, if cross threaded run a tap in the hole replace the bolt with a longer one and tighten. You might be able to get away with this if the leak is due to this bolt not tightening. If you have to remove the housing clean the area with a scoth brite pad and wipe with thinner or alcohol. rtv the lower side of the gasket put over the stat and rtv the top of the gasket. Tighten the housing evenly let dry before filling with water.

88dak gives good advice. The key to making the leakproof connection is cleanliness and a smooth gasket surface. Hopefully, you carefully scraped off and removed all of the old gasket material, then smoothed out the gasket seat with fine sandpaper or a Scotchbrite pad, like 88dak suggested. Use the paper gasket, with a thin bead of RTV sealer on both sides. I've had very spotty luck the few times that I've tried to get away with just RTV and no gasket. If you've stripped the threads, you're in for a pain in the a**, no doubt about it. But, it can be repaired, and you might luck out just by cleaning up the threads. Once you get everything back together, make sure you have the bolts started correctly, then tighten them down slowly and EVENLY, a few turns at a time. DO NOT overtighten them. Give the RTV some time to cure before refilling and starting the engine.

So here is a little update. I ended up taking it to goodyear due to time constraints. the bolt was not X-threaded, but they claim the bellhousing was warped. Im not really sure about that one it looks pretty straight to me.

Any way after $73 of labor a few gaskets and a new $7 bellhousing i have a working 180 t-stat.

This may be a little after the fact but, how much will this 180 T-Stat affect my emmisions?
