Dave
I have almost the same truck only in a 4x2 Club Cab, the first time I checked mine I got 18.5 with mixed driving, then at about 700 miles I added a K&N FIPK and DynoMax muffler and a soft Tonneau cover, I usually get 18-19 mpg most of the time with mixed driving the best I have got is 20.2 and the worst I have seen is 17.5 ( that was mostly in town ) I haven't done any long trips on the highway to know what I'll get there. If you search around this site you will find that all Dakota's are not created/built equal they seem to take on their own little personality. I can't think your Quad Cab could make that big of a difference, you just have a shorter bed and a little more cab space than a C C !

If your truck is relatively new, it will get poor MPG. I got around 14 until my truck got broken in. At 10,000 I was still only getting 16. Now with 20,000 and an Airaid and a Flowmaster, I get 20 consistantly.

those are all good ideas as to why you might be getting bad mileage but here's one: Maybe your foot is made of lead like mine?

I forgot about that. You could purchase an aftermarket Billet aluminum foot to replace the lead one. I think the site is www.slowthefu**down.com!!

Dave K, check out my post "GAS MILEAGE, HAH!" in the Performance Section of the Forum, dated 10/29/01. It stirred a lot of discussion on gas mileage. My 99 SLT 4x2 V6/auto 3.55 recently got 18.8mpg as my best yet. Was as bad as 16mpg. I have put in a K&N cold air intake, electric fan, Napa Cap/Rotor, Accel 8mm wires, coilwire re-route. I have a Flowmaster DeltaFlow muffler going in soon and I plan to add a tonneau cover as well. I may eventually modify the throttle body and go to 19# Ford Motorsports injectors. Lots of crap to do just to get better gas mileage (my goal is 21mpg), but the power gains are a REAL kick in the butt. Unfortunately, the 3.9V6 is just not as effecient an engine design as the GM 3.8. That's something that's real hard to change.

I've got a "00" CC with 3.9l 5spd and 3.21 tail gear even pulling 1200lb popup I avg. 20 to 22 mpg on highway. But maybe that has to do with
engine running at 2000 RPM at 70 MPH in 5th gear.

I am on the verge of buying a used Dodge Dakota Sport with the 3.9 v6. How does this engine compare to other competitor trucks in it's class for gas mileage. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks...Trick

I have a 2000 3.9 v6 with a 3" fabtech lift , 32" Goodyears, and a tonneau cover, i get bout 12/16 , i hopeing with a right tune up and different gearing to get bout 14/18, but lets not get our hopes up the 3.9 liter was not the best engine around, it was put in the engine line as a truck only engine by dodge. It was a base model engine, that means that it was cheap to make,or in other words cheaply made, my buddy has a 4.7 liter v8 , 4x4, 4"lift kit, 33" tires and he gets better mpg's than i do
