Subject: Steering Column Play and Rattling
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a '91, 3.9L with a non-tilt steering column. There is a lot of rattling from the column when I hit bumps. There is no play from side-to-side (radial) but there is 1/4" to 3/8" play in-and-out (axial). If I put pressure on the steering wheel when driving over bumps, the noises are eliminated or at least reduced. There is no play in any of the joints in the engine compartment when the steering wheel is moved in and out. With the horn cover off, the shaft moves in and out, indicating the nut holding the steering wheel to the shaft is tight.

The Chilton's manual I am using does not have a great diagram of the steering column disassembly. I cannot see where anything could be tightened between the steering wheel nut and the 1st knuckle in the engine compartment. What is not being shown in the diagrams? How far does the column need to be diassembled to access some other possible locations for this fix?

Thanks for any help you may provide!

I have that same problem with my truck. I took apart the steering column which was a pain in the ass. There is a collapseable shaft in the column for safety reason. A nylon insert holds the shaft together. The nylon insert on my truck doesn't hold the shaft together, so that is what I think makes the steering wheel have a little play in and out. I could be wrong, but that is what I think is causing your problem.

Figured it had to be something like that. Is it repairable? Did you need to remove the column from the truck to access the 'joint?'

Thanks!
