Subject: Bad Hesitation on '88 3.9
IP: Logged

Message:
Ive got a very bad hesitation in my '88 3.9 v6, it has a new fuel pump and filter, changed the throttlebody, had it in to a Dodge dealer to check all the codes, they came up with nothing. Someone must have had this problem and found out what it was! Please help me if you can, I just spent over 1,000.oo and it runs even worse than before. Thanks if you can help

Dodge Stalls Out
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 89 Dodge Dakota (4X4) which just stalls out as I'm driving. It seems like something is shorting out. Once I pull over it starts back up after turning it over a few times, but not right away. My mechanic can't find any error codes or why this is happening.

Any comments will be appreciated.

Thanks

Ken, try checking the distributor pick up. Mine did the same thing, driving along and just cut out and after a while it would start back up.

Hey , thanks for all the help guys, I have eliminated the EGR valve , it seems to be working ok. I don't have a catlyptic converter so that's not it. I think it seems like it is getting to much fuel, I had it running last night and it just reeked like gas, so this weekend I'm going to look at that aspect. Any more suggetions would be appreciated. Thanks again. Jim 88 Dakota

not everyone can buy a new truck, but thanks for the little comment. when you say hesitation do you hear a kinda sparking noise after you give it gas? or does it just take a second for the throttle to respond? mine did the sparking noise hesitation and come to find out the O2 sensor went bad.

Well after 18 years, maybe it's time to send it to the junkyard instead of spending money trying to fix it.

you might want to see if you can find a MAP sensor that you can swap out with your old one and see if that solves your problem. I've got a similar problem and I did some testing on mine yesterday and it seems as though I'm running out of spec, which has caused me some troubles with starting, etc.

What I did was back probed the center wire ( signal ) of the 3 in the map sensor with a pin and then you read the voltage at idle. It should be between 1.5 and 2v. I'm getting 1.39 at idle. Since I don't have an analog meter, I couldn't test the function of it as I swept the throttle, so the readings I got were just fluctuating numbers.

So my truck is starting to hesitate too, if i give it alot of gas, its like the truck pauses for a second before it picks up and remembers what its doing. new plugs, wires, cats, basic stuff. any advice? i read about the distributor pickup above but they said there truck cut off, mine dosent, it just pauses.
