Hey

I was wondering is it ok for the Engine Coolant to be BROWN?? I always thought it was green or alittle darker green.

Reason I say this is I was playin around under my hood last night{what else is new} ANd I was checking the levels and I took of the raditor cap and noticed that the Coolant is Brown. I've only had the truck 7 months and it just went in for its 6,000 service.

Can anyone shed somelight on this for me???

Brown?

Er, thats not right. It should be green... is there a rainbow film on the top of it too? It could be oil getting into the coolant through a blown head gasket or something if there is. Other than that, I'd be taking it into the dealer and pointing it out to them. Brown is not right.

I had this same concern with my new 02 Stratus. I looked at the coolant and it was brownish red. I was like oh crap!! then i consulted with members of my stratus car club and they had the same thing. Its the type of coolant the factory puts in I think they told me is was called Dex Cool or something like that. It appears as a reddish/rusty/brownish color.

Dex-cool (GM) is bright orange, it doesn't look brown and rusty till it needs to be changed. Toyota uses Red. I don't know what dodge uses now, i have green but it's in a '96. Another possibility is that the level was a little low and someone topped it off with the wrong stuff.

If the antifreeze looks milky brown and you have an automatic, have the radiator checked. The transmission oil cooler may be leaking, causing a milky brown condition.
