After reading all the posts on muffler preferences and catback choices, I settled on just replacing the stock muffler with a Dynomax super turbo (just like DakotaDan has) and just love the sound. I'm an old guy and didn't want the noise and this fits the bill perfectly. Nice low rumble.

No rice here, and you hardly notice it in the cab untill you get on it, it has a rather deep sound.

Good luck on the K&N

Thanks Again, DakotaDan
I am planning on putting the muffler into the stock 2.5in pipe from the cat and out of the muffler with 2.5-3in chrome tail pipe. or something similar(hopefully)
Chrysler just clamped on the tail pipe from the cat (in other words no weld) I thought that it was supposed to be fully welded. Probably just cutting labor costs at the factory(d%cks). But now no cutting for me. I did the exhaust on my 89 camaro with out a problem on the garage floor. Getting under this dak should be cake

Add me to the list of dynomax super turbo supporters...just installed it tonight, and other than a lot hack-sawing on my back, it went pretty smooth (if I could just get these rust chunks out of my eyes...). Hardly notice it in the cab, but it is there, sounds pretty damn good for a V6. It was a lot quieter than I thought it would be, but sounds great when you get on it.
Did the TB swap last weekend, and with those two mods combined...kick ass. Pulls strong through the entire rpm range now. I recommend.

Hey, i'm considering getting this Super Turbo muffler but, i have a couple questions. First, is it true it exits on the passenger side? Second, i have a 98' ext cab 3.9L dakota. When they say short bed, i'm not to sure if mine's a short bed. How do i tell? What if it is a long bed? And exactly how loud is it on the outside?

Drew, what I did is just keep the stock pipes but swap out the stock muffler with a Super Turbo. After reading numerous posts, I concluded that buying a catback system would hurt my low end torque and cost $200+ more than just replacing the muffler. I put mine on a '00 ext cab and used P/N 17748. I don't think there is any such thing as a long bed with an ext cab. The sound is kind of mellow on the inside and outside.
