Good afternoon! I am going to be buying a 1990 Dak club cab with V6 auto, buckets, tilt, cruise, no a/c, pwr driver's side mirror, hi-rise cap and am/fm cassette. The truck only has 49,000 ORIGINAL kms on it! Is this possible? What sorts of things are "common problems" with this year and model of truck? I joined CARFAX.COM and got a printout of the vehicles history based on the VIN # and it seems ok. I will of course have the truck checked by my mechanic before I purchase it. What should I be looking for for/at before I purchase it?

I have a 1989 4x4, and I cant recall anything in particular you need to check out before buying. As far as I know, there really arent any recurring problems with the early Generation I Dakotas.

I would just check out the usual things, like the condition of the tires, the brakes, and the shocks. Those are my top 3 things I end up changing after I buy a used car. Also look for some rust and oil leaks. Try to get a good feel for the transmission, too. Make sure it isnt slipping or making any weird noises. Check the alignment when you drive it, too. Also, check the condition of your two front axles and the CV boots. Make sure they are in good condition and not going to hell.

If you buy it, let us know, and we can help you from there...

Hi Joe E! I am looking for the common faults/problems/concerns that may occur with this year of truck. What problems have you had with your truck? What major items have you had to repair/replace? Do you know any special problems w.r.t. to V6 engine? the automatic tranny?

i have a 1990 Dakota Sport 4x4, 138,000 miles on it, bought it with 122,000

is it a 4x4 or 4x2

4x4 make sure the tranfer case shifts easily, or you will be buying a vacumline switch and cleaning up the front shift motor, never had any problems with the tranny, a flush and fill on the trany fluid helps alot, im going to replace a water pump gasket soon, i had the seals blow on my tranny and dumped the fluid on the road, cv boot went bad and took the front driveshaft with it on the drivers side, im thinking i did it when i jumped a set of railraod tracks, it started leaking grease after that, other than that i really havent had many problems, rust the ever occuring problem, uuummmm a heater core, might be a few other things, but not bad considering how badly the last owner beat it, i got it dirt cheap and put money into it, OH OH OH, the converters like to plug up, but now she runs smooooth and nice with 16 mpg average

krpt2nite........the truck odometer will not flip back to 0 after it went over 100,000 kms. I checked the truck out on CARFAX.COM and there is no indication that the odometer was "tampered with." Thr truck is not a 4 x 4 so i was just interested in the common problems with a 1990 Dak!

Tigerdak.....the truck IS NOT a 4 x 4. I don't do too much offroading so i don't really want a 4x4.
I did take the truck for a test drive on a Sunday and it felt really solid and tight. I did notice that at stop lights/signs, the motor seemed to be idling improperly-could be time for a new fuel filter, tune up or ? As well, the dealer told me that the rear differential has "chatter" in it because the fluid level is low and needs to be topped up-do you know anything about this? Thanks for the input and have a great day!

Superbee-the truck is not a 4 x 4. 2 wheel driv e is fine for me as i do not really do any off-roading. I took the truck out for a test drive on sunday and it ran fine-I did notice that it seemed to be idling just a bit off at stop lights/signs so it could be time for a new fuel filter, tune up or? The dealer also told me that there is a bit of "chatter" from the rear diff as the fluid level is low and needs toping up-do you know anything about this?
Thanks for your input and have a great week! A co-worker just showed up to work in her new 2002 Dak 4 x 4 Sport Cab-she loves it and says it goes like stink with the 4.7 in it!

Changing the rear diff fluids is a piece of cake. I'm thinking about doing both axles and my transfer case this weekend. My truck is the same as yours, just mine is a 4x4. We have the same engine, transmission, and everything else. That is why I provided some help for you. Let us know when you buy it and welcome to the family!

TigerDak.......thanks for the info. What do you think the truck is worth based on some of my previous e-mails-the dealer is asking $7800 Cdn. I was going to offer $6500 all taxes included (I know the red book valus is less than $3000 Cdn.)

That sounds way too much! First of all, its NOT a 4x4, and second of all, even though the miles are low, its STILL a 1990 truck. That is 12 years old. I would probably be happy to sell it to you for $3500-$4000 if I was lucky! Offering $6500 is quite steep if you ask me.

Find yourself a 1989 or 1990 convertible Dakota for sale.

Tigerdak.....thanks for the info. I talked to a reputable mechanic yesterday and he said he would offer $5000! He also said $7800 was way too steep. My guess is they probably bought it for $3500 which is approx. $700 above the red book value. In my minds eye, making $1500 on a used truck is pretty good so if I bought it for $5000 Cdn. the total would be $5725 with all taxes. could be quite happy purchasing it for that much. My concern is that, according to the dealer, there have been other people interested in the truck so I don't want to lose the deal for say $500-$1000 because I won't likely find nother such truck with 49k on it. I am prepared to go in there with a chq for the purchase price so I don't need financing or anything. What do you think?

Superbee-the truck was sold by the current manager of a GM dealership (he used to be a car salesman for Dodge) so he knows the history of the truck. I am not really sure what they paid for it approx. 1 month ago but i am assuming that they would only offer the seller the red/black book value + a little bit more because of the low kms (I know the person traded it in for a new van). The red book value is $2800 so i gave them $700 for the low kms to determine their purchase price. I talked to another Dodge dealer this morning, described the truck and he said that it would be advertised on their lot for $5995.00 Cdn. and it would likely sell for $4500-$4800 Cdn. + taxes. Based on the info. i have provided, what would you offer for this truck? How did you know that the dealer paid $3200 for yout truck? What techniques did you use to make sure you only paid $100 more than what the dealer bought the truck for?
Thanks for your help and have a great day!
