Greetings to all... Just found this awesome sight while searching for some help. I think I've spent 2 hours reading all these listings. Anyone here from SE PA? Anyhow... I just bought some accel extreme plug wires along with a cap/rotor. The wires came with a paper saying that they suggest removing the spark plug heat shields. My cc 4x4 has over 50K and to say the least they are stuck. Used a can of liquid wrench and I swear I pulled on those things till I lifted my truck off the ground. (well not quite, but...) Any ideas?

Welcome Ralph,

I never took off my spark plug heat shields. I heard you can take lock pliers and yank real hard. Try wacking with a heavy hammer and use pipe or rod as an extension. Good luck.

Noooooo! Don't use a hammer to whack those heatshields. If ya absolutely gotta take 'em out....notice they are just a formed piece of sheetmetal(while you are at this, ya may as well change plugs). Use your visegrips to collapse it in on itself. You did good by using some Kroil(REALLY the best) or Liquid Wrench. Twist and get it to break loose from the head where the rust has welded the shield to the head. Maybe carefully using a flat blade screwdriver to assist getting things to pop loose when you make some room betwen the head and the shield. Mine popped out quite by accident as I was doing a plug change. You are probably going to ruin the plug so have a set ready. AND don't forget to use compressed air to blow out any debris before you remove the plug. We don't need any junk in the cylinder do we? Hope this helps.

Hi again! Thanks for the suggestions.... I switched to a can of kroil (too cheap to buy it the first time). I got all six of them out in about 3 hours.... 4 came out in one piece, however the other two is what took about 2 1/2 hours. Couldnt believe the amount of gunk and rust and such hidden in there. Now the performance modifications can begin......

Hey I'm having troubles gettin one of my plug wires lose. Is it due to those darn heat sheilds? Man I would almost think the darn wire is welded to the plug.

Alan,

Thanks for the correction. Maybe I'll try to take mine off before they rust on.

Yup, now you can get to doing some serious mods. I'm just getting started. KROIL is the best for rusty stuff. I work on aircraft and we swear by it. Just be sure to use compressed air (with safety glasses on) to blow out any loose junk. as the shields come out. Mine are gone as well. BTW,,,,when you change plugs,,,,,use some plug boot grease to ease puttin' 'em back on and for gettin' back off easier the next plug change. It's simple, takes a sec and saves aggravation. Just like the ad sez,,,,"A little dab'll do ya." As far for Mr. Leddon? I think you may end up getting a set of wires b/4 you're done. Why? 'Cause if you yank on anything but the plug boot you'll most likely break the conductor inside and that'll cause anything from a dead cylinder to that wierd misfire that you will pull your hair out chasing. Besides,,, this'll give ya the chance to install those Jacobs wires you know you've been wanting anyways. Right? Hope this helps.

Hey Alan, that tip on the kroil really helped. I really should have known better; I work for a nat gas utility and we use that for all kinds of stuff. I think maybe a can of it might find its way home and replace that liquid wrench can in my garage. I think I would recommend anyone taking those darn things out before its too late. 2 of my shields were so rusted in, I had to actually rip them out in pieces. As far as mods go, I started with the autolite plugs that everyone here is glowing about along with the accel wires and accel brass cap/rotor. I also made a home made k&n intake, 180* thermostat, and also a v8 throttle body. I'm anxious to get everything on and take it for a spin.....

Dan,

sounds familiar, but not quite sure. Where is the company based? Just finished my intake and am anticipating the delivery of my throttle body. Anyone going to chryslers at Carlisle this year?

JBA makes wires that fit down into the shields and are easy to get off when you need too.check speedtweaks they have them, no need to rip the shields out, headers will still fit with them!

Hi again
Hope all went well. My heat shields decided to depart when my plug socket got stuck and when I was able to get a grip(yeh, yeh, I lost my grip years ago) with Vise Grips, the whole tootin' thing came out. So, they all took the big vacation. KROIL(now I suppose I have to pay them royalties) is some really super stuff. Like I said I work on aircraft and they are not as clean and pristine as some might think. I dunno, but I swear by it. I'm gonna do the 1.7 rocker thing as I have heard that is the seat of the pants thing that is worth the money time and effort to install and still doesn't drain the wallet. Ups the power and the gas milage at the same time. So as I have heard. I've done the cold air deal(now there is an oxymoron,,,cold air,,,in Phoenix AZ?) and relocated my iat sensor, but that really didn't provide as much difference as I had hoped. Maybe a set of headers?

OJ,
You should be able to get KROIL at almost any good parts place. Pick your favorite. It's the bomb for stuck rusted parts. Like they say, "Ask for it by name. Accept NO substitutes."
