I spoke to a sales rep at Jegs about the best ignition/coil, etc. for my 2000 quad. He told me that I would not see any difference in either performance or economy. I aked about new wires, rotor cap, et el. and he said the same thing... No difference in performance or economy.

All this because the computer will adjust to compensate for whatever we do to it.

Sooooo now I am confused. Help me resolve this.

He's only 1/2 right. On a completely stock engine...an aftermarket coil may not do much of anything. However, if you're running Nitrous, Supercharger (or Turbocharger), cam, heads, intake...or anything that helps the engine ingest more air (and fuel)...the hotter coils WILL help on mid-top end power. We've already proven that on a Supercharged engine and on a Nitroused engine (both Magnum engines).

At least you're getting rid of some crummy OEM parts for better quality pieces.

well from what i have seen on my moms 2000 Z28 just wires helped. Her car wasnt nitrous assisted/supercharged/turbocharged and we put on a set of taylor sparkplug wires and it smoothed out the dyno curve and added 5 hp. Now i dont know actual numbers for a dakota but i just had to mention that because her car is computer controlled.

I noticed a difference just changing to the Autolite plugs...it doesnt stutter or stumble when its cold as much, and fuel economy went up slightly.

THe only time you will see a performance increase replacing ignition parts on a stock engine is when the old parts are worn out. You said you gained 5 hp by changing the wires. I think it's more likely you just regained the horsepower you were losing due to corrosion, etc. in the old wires. Oem replacements probably would have done just as well.

Jon,
first off how corroded are a 2000 vehicles ignition parts that are not to be replaced for 100,000 miles? second, wouldnt it suck if i told you that we had it dynoed at 5,000 miles? yes it would because it was! ha! i have a whole msd ignition system on my truck and i know i have gained performance (wether in the way of mpgs or et). Also it wasnt just one dyno without the aftermarket wires and one with..... it was three with and three without and they all produced the same results.... now size your mouth to your foot before you go thinking that you know everything.

ps.... i know more than you! ;-)
