Subject: Check Engine Code Po442

Hey All,
I went to AutoZone (very nice staff!!) and checked my check engine trouble light. Their scanner said that it was code "P0442: Evap leak monitor, Small Leak Detected." The guy at AutoZone suggested I change my fuel cap. I did that and the light went away....for about 150 miles. Now it is back. Does anybody have any other ideas on what it could be? Again, any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Mark you should have bought you a Haynes manual while you were at the Zone #30021 Page 6-20

I'll give you a brief statment... it says the EVAP system probably wont fail during the service life of the vehicle; however if it does , the hoes ot charcoal canister are usully to blame.

Refer to the hose routing diagram in the engine bay.

There is a whole page on this subject and photos to go with it, If I could copy/paste I would for you.

Check your hoses, esp. where they go into the carbon canister. I have a 2001 fullsize 3.9 work series truck and had the same problem. On mine, I had to remove the canister before I could see the cracked hose. It was the hose that runs from the canister to the hard plastic line on the frame. On the fullsize, the canister is located under the pass side cab rear corner.

Does anyone know if this problem will cause a constant revving up/down of the engine, even while driving? I am getting the evap code, and am also experiencing a constant revving up/down when idle or driving. Sometimes during the idle rev, the engine will actually stall - its becoming a huge pain. It also seems to make the transmission shift roughly when i take my foot off of the gas to de-accelerate.
I had the transmission looked at by a mechanic, they said there was nothing wrong with it, and threw on some lubrication. I am really at a loss here. I am driving a 2001 4.7 dakota 2wd.

Check the hose next to oil fill cap, there is a test port in the hose with green cap and the hose that comes up from back of engine splits on that tee and gives you that evap code. i have found it twice and cut the split end off.

I have the P0455 and have fixed cracked hoses, replaced purge solinoid, bought a new gas cap and still have the code after reset. I had it smoke tested before I replaced the solinoid. I am becoming incredibly frustrated. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

P0455 means you have a large leak, start by checking the hoses. If you can not find leak, take it to a shop were they can smoke test the system.

I brought my 2003 Dodge Grand Caravan in to be smoked, check engine light on with code PO455, had leak detection pump replaced got car back drove about 28 miles light back on with same code brought back found a cracked hose, replaced got car back drove over 50 miles light back on with same code, brought back found a bad purge valve, replaced drove around 58 miles light back on same code, brought back replaced some hoses even though they seemed fine and every time the garage did a smoke test and computer test and it would pass. Drove about 78 miles light back on now code reads PO455 brought back, garage called chrysler dealer and they said it was vapor canister, put new one in drove car about 86 miles light back on and now both codes PO442 and PO455 come up. Now the garage is at a loss of what the problem could be any ideas because I am paying for things I don't need because it has not fixed the problem. The garage has always maintained that the gas cap is fine and the filler neck is fine has always passed the smoke test but I am getting a new factory gas cap to see if that works!
