just purchased a 97 Dakota Sport club cab, color, Magenta. 48000 miles, it has an engine clatter noise at idle, goes away at higher rpm. V6 is mated to a 5speed stick. Sounds a bit like timing chain slack, but it also could be the idler, tensioner pulley. Anyone experienced this? Got a 45 day unlimited mileage warranty so i need to act on this.
Thanks
Fred

When you say engine clatter, what exactly do you mean? What is the type of noise that it is making?

My engine has been making a noise lately like it has a loose belt or something. It is making a squeeking sound. How do I tell if it is a loose belt or something else. Also could it be the pulleys?

Thanks

I ran for a little over 100,000 with that rattle redline it every day in my 93 3.9. It's the timming chain tensioner.
Have it done while you can, it can get to be a nightmare if you wait and try to repair it yourself.

Thats my $.02

I have an '89 that has been making a clattering noise too, only instead of at idle, it happens during shifting and deceleration. I am pretty sure it is the heat riser valve on the driver-side exhaust manifold. Would there be any harm done if I just wired this valve open or closed? I have been chasing this noise forever, and would like to get rid of it. Thanks!

HAVE THE TIMING CHAIN TENSIONER INSTALLED!! I ran a copy of the "Magnum V6 - Timing Chain TSB" (found on SpeedTweaks - Tips and Tricks webpage). Gave it to the dealer service rep when I dropped off my '92 V6 Dakota at 80,000 miles. They installed the tensioner as detailed in the TSB and BINGO! This is the first time my truck has not rattled! The truck has rattled since new - I always thought it was lifter/rocker noise. The fix was not under warranty, so it cost me $390.00, but IMHO, it was WELL WORTH IT! Very quite - at last!
Thanks!
