First: I have a consistent clunking noise coming from the engine everytime I come to a stop or put it in park and let idle. Sometimes I can let off the brake let it roll a little re-apply the brake and it will go away, but most of the time it doesn't. I put in a 180 thermostat and 3923 plugs but that didn't help. Also I use Arco 89, have a v8 tb if that has anything to do with it, and 140k miles on it.

Second: The needle on my oil gauge goes up every time I accelerate hard, I've never noticed it to do that before. Is this normal? I use Penzoil 10w-30.

Third: My engine has trouble starting after it's been sitting over night. It will start but it won't rev up to where it should like it's suffocating it stops at like 800-1000rpms . I usually just rev out of it and then it's fine for the rest of the day. I've replaced the fuel pump, plugs, wires, cap&rotor, 02 sensor, and have had a fuel injection service done for a previous stalling problem about 5000mi ago so I don't think any of those are the problem.

Sorry for hitting you with three different problems all at once, believe me I wish I didn't have to ask. Any help with any of these would be much appreciated, Thanks.

the clunking noise to me from what you say sounds like the the U-joints are going bad, and for the oil pressure rising that is normal at an idle (low RPM's) the oil pressure is lower than when you are, say at 3 grand.

sanger0n,

I have the same problem with my '98 3.9, with the clunking coming from the engine compartment.
It kind of sounds like its coming from the firewall at first but when you listen closely from the inside it's not.
Craknjak u-joint noise sounds a little different than this. If we really are talking about the same thing, then it's a deeper clunking noise.

Scott- It's not actually stalling but I'll have to check that out, thanks.

craknjak- Thanks for the answer to the oil gauge prob I also found the answer elsewhere, I guess it is normal funny though never noticed it to do that before.

Don't think the clunking noise is coming from the U-joints, I'm pretty sure it's coming from the engine as it's a consistent clunking noise when I'm at a stop (i.e. clunk clunk clunk) and doesn't go away until I drive off. The closest thing I found to the problem is the timing chain but most people describe that as a rattling or clattering sound. Looks like I'll have to take it to the mechanic.

Thanks for everybody's help.

Sanger0ne,

If you come up with the cause please post it. I have been putting up with this same thing for the last 6 months and I can not find the cause. I've pulled the tranny and checked the back of the engine and the tranny its self and still nothing.
Hey, if you could either post it here or e-mail your results to me I would vary much appreciate it.
Heres my address: LOGIC71B@NETSCAPE.NET

Thanks

Logic - I'll probably be taking it to my mechanic next week. I'll post it as a new topic here in the v6 forum titled "your name".

And if you find the cause would you be so kind as to do the same for me?

Sanger0ne,

Sounds good.
I am a perfectionest and when it comes to my dodge it has to be running perfectly. I spend a lot of spare time working out little squeaks and creaks that may start up, so on that note you should know that I will not rest until the clunking is fixed.

LOGIC - Finally got it in the shop and it's an inner engine noise either a thrust bearing or bushing rod, which calls for a new engine as pointed out by mdandl. So I'm having a rebuilt engine put in, the money issue sucks but when I get the truck back I'll practically have a new engine in there, helll gyahhh!

Good luck on finding the noise hopefully it's not the same problem, Lates.

For the clunking noise I would check the engine mounts.
