Well I guess it would be personal prefrence. I prefer a manual. My truck is auto and it won't bark tires from stand still. An auto is easier to drive around town with, well for me anyway. But with a manual you have more control.

It really is all about preferance. Used to be that the autos took all day to shift, so if you wanted to do any kind of racing, you wanted a stick. This isn't as true today and any lag time that does exist in an auto can be cured with shift kits.

I personally prefer the stick because I can control what gear I'm in. I would think that would be an advantage in offroading. I don't do it, but I think it would suck to be climbing a hill and have the truck decide to shift half way up and have the truck start sliding. This would be similar to driving on ice I think, once you have momentum, the last thing you want to do is shift and loose traction.

If you gonna be doing a lot of off-roading, I would recommend postingthe same question on the offroad board. I'm sure there is a lot more experience (and opinion) on this issue on that board.

Yeah, my stick proved -very- useful in low-traction conditions (read: ice). I actually managed to pull an S-10 back onto our drive way after he slid off into the lower area alongside even though the drive way was a solid sheet of ice! I fell down 3 times ;0) Just dropped it into second and let the clutch out slowly, it took a bit, but I managed to get him out. Of course, by then I was off the driveway too. Just unhooked Mr S-10 and drove back onto it.

Yeah, the stick is a personal preferance. It -does- give you more control, and you get an extra gear to play with! Eventually you don't even realize your shifting in traffic until you've been sitting stopped with the clutch depressed for 20 minutes. At which point I usually just put it in Neutral and let the clutch out.

i personally like a stick shift, gives u more control as previously stated in the winter. also saves brakes cause u can use engine to slow vehicle for traffic.it is a personal preference.

Manual gives you more horsepower at the wheels as well. I think you lose 19% or your horsepower through an auto tranny drivetrain but only 16% with a stick.

I'm new to this site, but I've been reading many posts over the last month or so, trying to get smart via the experiences of others. I've driven a stick since I was 16...does anyone remember Hippies, Herbert Humphrey and Jefferson Airplane?. Anyway, my Mazda B2500 had a 5 speed in it, but, in my 2 week old RC 3.9L Sport, I opted for an automatic. I've gotten to the point where I'm just plain freakin' tired of shifting, especially at backed up stop signs and the like. I still understand the allure of the stick, though...my 22 year old daughter wouldn't even consider an automatic when she had to replace her Honda a few months ago. Ahh, the exuberance of pain-free youth...
