: Help, I was on mile 990 or so on a 1400 mile road trip when the ABS dash light and Brake dash light came one, the speedometer stopped working completely and in stop and go traffice it frequently stalled when I came to a stop - quietly the engine just shut off. I've read that this is likely a failed speed sensor and the stalling may be related, but is the ABS and brake light also related?

Chris, I'd say replace your speed sensor first. That's the stall problem... As for the ABS? I can't see the speed sensor messing that up? But fix what you know is wrong first, Ya never know, It may fix it all!?

Its the speed sensor that is faulty. It will cure
the stalling, abs and brake light illumination,
and speedo malfunction. The dodge dealer carries
it for $30. Its located on the rear differential.

Thanks for the info. It's on the rear differential huh? Surprising, I would have bet it was on the transmission. The dealer here (San Diego) charges $54 for it. I have one ordered. Here's another question: I put 31"x10.5" tires on my 2wd, is the speed sensor tire size specific? Can I get one that compensates for the larger tires?

The speed sensor is not tire specific. It monitors the ring gear in the differential. When the sensor senses lockup, info goes to the controller antilock brakes and pulses the brakes to prevent lockup. As far as i know, you can't do anything to correct speedo error due to larger or smaller tires yet. Take care. Andy.

Apparently you have to have the dealer reprogram the computer in the truck that controls the speedometer. And this only works if the tires are too much bigger or smaller than the stock tires. And of course it takes them a full hour to do this at $72 per hour.

Thanks sic, I think I'd rather deal with it being 10% off, my mileage stays lower and my girlfriend doesn't realize how fast I'm really going.

BTW, I replaced the rear wheel speed sensor today and everything thing is fixed, but the check engine light was on so I disconnected the neg battery cable to reset it. Okay so far. Thanks for all the help.

Hey, did the battery die? When the alt. putzes out, the ABS is the first light to go on 'cause it needs no less than 12 vlts. to opperate, then the sedo. goes 'cause that's electric, then usually the radio is next, then it dies cause there isn't enough power for the coil.

I had the same problem. I replaced the Rear Speed sensor and the ABS brake lights went out but stalling still occured and no speedometer. I took it to the shop and I had not seated the sensor fully down. Moral of story: Make sure the sensor is well seated in mounting hole!
